Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Yes, all good places. If Nashville is full, the need may extend even to Jackson, TN.

Maybe posted already, but my sister said she read that the whole Bed And Breakfast organization is giving free lodging for evacuees. If so, I expect the info can be found online.

“I was thinking there was a football game in Knoxville this weekend. That will probably take up lots of the hotel rooms.”

I believe that’s true. Also the annual fair (Tennessee Valley Fair, I think) is going on. (Maybe Knoxville isn’t the best idea after all.)

I used to drive from Sarasota to NY and I had several people tell me on different occasions to not bother with I-95 or I-75 but rather to take 301 north to Jacksonville.

I-75 between Orlando and Atlanta (!) and I-95 in GA and SC are now unbelievably jammed.

We often drive between CT and FL - I'm the navigator, constantly checking the traffic on Google Maps, etc. on the iPad. We've saved ourselves countless hours of aggravation in avoiding traffic jams by occasionally getting off the main highways, and taking side roads. Some of those roads have been quite scenic and interesting, too.

I wish everyone who is trying to get out of FL, GA, SC, etc. Godspeed, but I don't understand sitting in many hours-long traffic jams when you can get off the highway and take other roads....?

When my husband and I went through the Northridge [LA] Earthquake in 1994, we headed north into Ventura County and locked in a hotel room for a lower flat rate for 4 weeks. We knew we’d be out of our dwelling for at least 4 - 5 weeks. I remember going down to the front desk and saying, “we’ll need this room for more than 1 week. What can you do for us?....” Suggest you negotiate a rate for 30 days - that way you may save some money. All our relatives lived on the East Coast, and all our local friends/neighbors/acquaintances were in the same bad straits due to the EQ so - we had to use a still-standing hotel. It worked out well, we made the right decision....

I left north of Atlanta one morning about 6:30 and drove with my two sons down to Cudjoe Key, near Key west, at 10:30 that night.

I think the traffic from evacuation now makes that drive 50 hours instead of 16 hours.

(Honesty requires me to admit to excessive speed at certain times.)

Two notes on this graphic:

(1) It's based on a GFS model track. Euro/UKMet are looking better; would push this a bit further west.
(2) It's only through Sunday...figure another 12+" for the peninsula on Monday.

This is one way to get people to leave Miami Beach

http://miami.cbslocal.com/2017/09/08/south-beach-a-virtual-ghost-town-ahead-of-irma/

“The mayor said people who live in highrises hoping to stay are finding that won’t be the case. Building managers are turning off the water, air conditioning and power to encourage people to leave and seek shelter on the mainland.

“We just want to make sure that people understand that you need to leave Miami Beach,” said Mayor Levine.

People who do plan to stay should know that Miami Beach will not be putting their first responders out during the storm to assist those in trouble.”
