Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

If Irma tracks like Donna from 1960, the big fear is that if the storm heads out into the Atlantic, we could have a close repeat of what happened during Sandy in 2012.

My local weather reports that they’re not seeing much effect at all from the mountains of Cuba on the storm.

This storm is wide enough to hit all of the Peninsula with hurricane-force winds even if the center tracks along the western coastline.

Where it's mostly Everglades.

But that track could put the Orlando, FL metro area under threat due to the size of the storm and the east side of the storm being the most intense and dangerous. There could be potentially substantial damage to the theme parks in the Orlando area: Disney World, Universal Studios Florida and Sea World.

“1935 Labor Day Hurricane...literally, the salt and wind and rain literally blasted clothes off people. That’s how strong that kind of wind is.”

Yep, the force of the sand literally sandblasted away victims facial features and made tem hard to ID. Many were buried in a mass grave in Islamorada.

That hurricane was so strong an compact that people in Miami really didn’t feel anything.

There’s a good book about this hurricane - Storm Of The Century: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 - by Willie Drye

By the time it reaches Orlando, Irma's eye would have been over land so long it would probably be just a tropical storm by then. A lot of rain, maybe some flooding, but nothing catastrophic there.

Charlie was still able to kick Orlando’s arse and it was a smaller, weaker storm. Do not discount impacts away from the center of this storm.

Are you sure about that? It's hard to bury people in the Keys because of hard limestone just under the surface. I read that the victims of the 1935 hurricane had their bodies piled in pyramids and then set ablaze.

OK, I stand corrected. They were cremated and the ashes put in an above ground crypt.

You are correct.

To be clear, Bastardi said Irma’s initial Florida contact could look like Donna in 1960. He didn’t specifically adopt the eastward move to the Atlantic.

BTW, I know NOTHING about hurricanes, just passing along info.

South Carolina governor has a news conference scheduled for 6 PM to most possibly announce mandatory evacuations of coastal areas.

I'd almost agree, but Irma is such a huge storm that the wind and rain damage from the east side of the storm could reach hundreds of miles from the eye. That makes the Orlando area particularly vulnerable even as a Category 2 storm.

Good luck! The major thoroughfares were insane and more so today, so your solution to fly out privately was sound. Finding a room is difficult. A miracle happened today. We needed a room for Saturday, my niece went on hotels.com. In the sea of red dots was one green dot and we got a reservation for Saturday through Wednesday. You may want to try that site. I wish you and your family the best. Until the next post! 😺
