Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Turner was the idiot that defied the governor’s recommendations and told people to sit tight and get flooded.

If that’s what you like, you got it!

My son-in-law and my three grandkids are hunkering down in Sarasota. I am in my “worrying chair”.

....and because of that I will never donate to SA or RC again.

I donated to Samaritan’s Purse and the Baptist Mens’ Assoc for Texas. But, here I am in Winter Park FLA, about to get it myself :)

God be with us.

“Turner was the idiot that defied the governor’s recommendations and told people to sit tight and get flooded.”

I had that same thought. Brought memories of Ray Nagin in NOLA. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to vote for a person just to be “fashionable”. coughObamacough

Yes that was really a bad storm. We had a crazy neighbor who was out walking around in 100 mph wind with huge tree branches flying around. Its a miracle he wasn’t killed. :-)

Samaritan’s Purse is my first choice......they mobilize immediately!
This is Franklin Graham’s organization.

Was it gouging, or spreading the supply out by making hoarding unattractive?

I suspect the people at the end of the lines would see the latter.

In this particular case, yes we are kinda being post-screeners... keeping the thread clear of extraneous chatter. If anyone wants to talk about any political, religious or even meme side-issues of this disaster-in-the-making, we are inviting those folks to start their own thread.

As outlined in post #1, though, this is a PSA thread: a 1-stop location for info about the storm, its track, preparations, traffic, evacuation info, etc is welcomed. Thanks for understanding.

Being an armchair meteorologist (admittedly the worst type), I have been riveted the last couple of weeks to the extreme weather happening in our country.

My donations, if possible my time and my prayers go up for those in the path of the storm. In all of your storm prep, make time for spiritual preparation.

I remember Hurricane Georges was predicted to take the same northerly turn near Florida and it didn’t turn as forecasted. It kept on trucking right thru Cuba and the strait into the Gulf of Mexico before a Florida Panhandle landfall.

My child’s speech therapist lost her mother during the Rita evacuation. People learned from that lesson.

In the end, the death toll from this storm is likely to be less than the death toll from that stupid spectacle.

I live here, and the flooding was completely catastrophic....but was also totally hit or miss with seemingly little rhyme or reason. I was in a square with neighborhoods flooded on all sides. My neighborhood got water up to the curb when we got 9 inches of rain in 3 hours but that was that.

The system of essentially moving people from a danger zone to a non danger zone worked far better than putting 6 million people on I-10 and saying “Good luck.”

The one blessing of Harvey was that it was not a wind storm. I never even lost Wi-Fi let alone power. I think 97 percent of the region had power uninterrupted throughout the storm. So, I had local news on, a laptop open to the county website, and my phone open to social media the entire time - as did most people, it seemed. We knew pretty well at all times where the water was rising and where it was likely to rise. I think that helped tremendously.

Ike was a wind storm. People were without power for weeks following that.

This storm has a chance to be a wind and water storm thanks to the storm surge. I would certainly bug out of South Florida at this point if I thought I could actually get to Orlando or points north.

The message I’m getting from friends and family is that the fear of the road is the fear of running out of gas.

Unless I had a beach front condo, I think I would rather be in my home under any circumstance than be stuck in my car on the side of 95.

“I donated to Samaritan’s Purse and the Baptist Mens’ Assoc for Texas.”

Although they don’t get much press from MSM (wouldn’t be PC), I believe the Southern Baptist Men’s Association usually is the first group on site at any disaster. Extremely well organized, with fully stocked rigs ready to go with almost no notice. I’m not SBC, but used to attend one of their churches and would hear stories.

I guess you’re staying put in Winter Park...? Hopefully you’ll miss the brunt. In our devotions we’ve been praying for y’all, and will continue.

The most stressful part of Harvey was my father texting me every hour or so asking me for an update. Saying “I’m not flooded yet” 48 times in three days was it’s own stress creator.

The good news (I guess) here is that the storm probably is not going to stay in any once place very long.

Will regular Buffalo milk work? ;)

Our neighbor raises them for fun and profit. It takes 5 years to bring them to butchering weight. It’s kind of fun to look out my kitchen window and see them grazing on the hills in the distance. ;)

Getting raw milk is no problem; the guy that rents our crop land has a big dairy, and we care for his Heifers in our pasture from Spring through fall. ;)
