After Siding With Dems, Trump Responds to GOP Criticism With a Reminder
Townhall.com ^ | September 8, 2017 | Courtney O'Brian

Republicans on Capitol Hill are surprised and "confounded" that the leader of their party, President Trump, sided with top Democrats in the debt ceiling debate this week, hiking it for three months.

He even earned a bit of rare praise from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Then, Trump twisted the knife even further by taking the advice of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in regards to DACA. At her urging, the president tweeted out a rather compassionate message for illegal immigrants who currently benefit from the program. They don't have to worry during the six-month delay, Trump told them.

What gives, the GOP wondered.

Trump, hearing the criticism, immediately pounced on the opportunity to send this reminder.

Republicans, sorry, but I've been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn't happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

...never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control - will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

In other words (those that can't fit in a tweet), if Republicans failed so miserably in regards to health care - something they've been screaming about for seven years - how can they be trusted to enact meaningful tax reform and rein in our debt?

A few Republican leaders, who although admit they were taken aback by Trump's reaching out to Democrats, acknowledged that this is an OK short term solution. House Speaker Paul Ryan told the press Thursday that while not ideal, it is "perfectly reasonable and rational."

On Twitter, the president urged Republicans "to start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP."

"Hurry!"

As a tactic for lighting a fire under the leaderships' asses, particularly on legislation everyone knows is going to pass anyway, I see no problem with it.

However, Trump's tweets on DACA are not encouraging, nor is the position he has so far taken.

There is no need for Republicans to pass enabling legislation for DACA -- in six months or in sixty years -- something which the President has encouraged. We already have immigration laws. If "Dreamers" want to be Americans, there is a process in place to do that, and it involves getting in line.

Trump's statement that absent legislation he will "do something" is the same statement 0bama made in this regard ("if Congress doesn't act, I will".) The President doesn't get to usurp Constitutional authority in the event of legislative inaction. Saying he will is no more acceptable coming from Trump than it was from 0bama.

Anyone the least bit comfortable with the idea that the President can (or should) act to extend an Unconstitutional DHS order -- especially one already repudiated by the Federal Courts -- is a cultist, not a conservative.

That’s an accurate synopsis. President Trump’s mastered it. Thank God.

My family would be much better off without O-care, but as we have seen, it’s diabolically hard to kill.

Even on Gorsuch, McConnell had to have his teeth pulled.

This statement is false.

On the day Gorsuch was nominated, McConnell made clear that he was going to be cleared by the Senate. He was asked if that meant the end of the SCOTUS filibuster, and his reply was "he will be confirmed."

He kept that promise, from day one. No fan of McConnell's, but he did not have to have his teeth pulled on Gorsuch.

No, he is not an ideologue -thank God. We have a ton to do and stagnation isn’t doing anyone any good. He’s playing hardball, to do so requires top player participation from both sides. The Republicans thought they had him hamstung...idiots. It’s bigger than that - MAGA.

The dems are actively working against him but will work with him if he gives them what they want.

That does not constitute "working with him" it constitutes "using him," by definition.

Hopefully they’ll address it soon.

Can’t argue with your thoughts along those lines though.

Trump is a great user of Twitter which I’ve never cared for. I’m glad he’s good at that stuff and he’s absolutely bypassing the lying leftist media by doing so, so I’m very glad for Trump and Twitter in that regard - I just don’t care to use it to post what I want to say.

But Trump also uses Facebook and I don’t know what else to get more in-depth messages across as well directly to Americans.

... what this might mean under President Harris in 4 or 8 years

Hmmm ... your implication being the American electorate will in four years be ready for another far-Left mulatto to lead the country. If so, then you must accept that our Constitution and our Republic are in mortal danger.

Yes and I’m bothered by his frightened delivery today. He sounds like Nancy and Chuck have the goods on him and he’s hoping they don’t act on some sort of blackmail threat. I could be wrong, but his voice today sounds very weak.

I’m very disappointed in the President today. I know when I’ve been lied to.

If that was not obvious after FDR's "Presidency" you must not have yet been born, or studied history at all.

You really don’t understand just how duplicitous and conniving Schumer is, don’t you?

This statement is false.

This statement is true. The roar of the base lit into McConnell and he decided to take action. If no one had said anything McConnell would have hemmed and hawed as usual.

Trump supporters and Trump himself acted proactively. McConnell did not take the initiative.

I don’t know if you’ve made politics your religion, but someone who does would take the same position you do on this.

You really don’t understand just how duplicitous and connuving Ryan, McConnell and McCarthy are, do you? Rookie.

You’ll notice, in Trump’s announcement of the deal, he specifically call out thode three weasels. Too damn apropos.

Lovin’ every minute of it.

I can and will make deals with the Democrats if you don’t get your act together. Your failure to repeal and replace Obamacare and pass tax cuts won’t be on me. If you make me successful, you will be successful. But if you keep thwarting my agenda, I have options.

That's about it.

The Republican "leadership" is scum.
