No, Trump’s pivot to the Dems is not a genius move (#NeverTrump Alert)
NY Post ^ | September 8, 2017 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 09/08/2017 10:42:09 PM PDT by Oshkalaboomboom

The news that President Trump abandoned Republicans to strike a deal with congressional Democrats on a three-month extension of the debt limit yielded a predictable response from his predictable cheerleaders: It was brilliant and typically shrewd for the author of “The Art of the Deal” to take the very first offer the Democrats made and ask for nothing in return.

Less obsequious observers on the right claimed this was the long-prophesied moment. The seventh seal had been broken. Donald Trump was “pivoting” at last. “The pivot is real and it’s spectacular!” proclaimed Ben Domenech, the publisher of The Federalist.

In the lexicon of Trumpism and anti-Trumpism, “pivot” has many meanings. But in this context, pivot means to reach across party lines and work with Democrats, giving the shaft to his own party, or at least to the GOP’s conservatives.

Many conservatives have feared such a move from the earliest days of Trump’s candidacy. The former New York Democrat holds no deep love for ideological conservatism, and many of his favorite issues (protectionism, infrastructure, etc.) are more naturally part of the Democratic portfolio.

But those fears didn’t pan out at first. The president and congressional Republicans tried mimic the Democrats in the wake of Barack Obama’s victory in 2008 and run the table, particularly on ObamaCare “repeal and replace,” on a partisan basis. Unfortunately, the GOP couldn’t get it done. This infuriated many conservatives, Republicans and Trump himself, and to some extent rightly so.

For years, Republicans said that if they could win both Congress and the White House there’d be nothing they couldn’t do. Whether this was a lie or just wishful thinking is debatable.

Regardless, they failed for several reasons. The Republican majority in the Senate is much narrower than the Democratic majority was when Obama was elected.

What an idiot. This was a move against the establishment RINOs — Ryan and McConnell — not conservatives.

The Demonrats are getting a 3 month debt ceiling extension instead of the 18 months the RINOs wanted so the RINOs could pretend to be something that they are not in the midterms. So what? President Trump got to give a good slap to Republican leadership and it allows him to continue pressuring RINOs while giving Schumer and Pelosi basically nothing of real value. The midterms will still be nearly a year away... who cares?

Does anyone know if Jonah ever had a job other than the National Review gig that his mommy procured for him?

Some extent. Just wishful thinking. It was just a mistake by the GOP leadership. Another mistake. Keeps happening for some reason.

Classic weasel words from Jonah Goldberg here.

Prior to Trump’s controversial maneuver, I suppose you’ve been fully supportive of his dedication to fulfill his campaign promises, yes?

Let’s see Trump couldn’t convince two RINO’s that are consistently with Pelosi and Schumer to vote for ObamacareLite and somehow that is the GOP’s fault!!!

Looks like Trump sucks worst than Boehner when it comes to deal making LOL!!!!

Only one crying a River right now is you when I called you out for supporting Democrat Socialists. Like a true Liberal when confronted with facts your only option is to name call.

So Chump you would now all be for Trump siding with Pelosi and Schumer to enforce stricter Gun-Control measures that would really teach those RINOs who is in charge.

HiTech RedNeck wrote “This move is to make the Republicans jealous. They weren’t serving up anything coherent or cogent.”

If that were true then Hillary would have been a better choice now wouldn’t it.

This move was a complete betrayal of everything he said post election. Since when is siding with Democrats Socialists Making America Great Again.

Should be “Pre-Election” but in this case both Pre and Post Election. Putting Socialists in the Driver’s Seat is never a good idea unless you want to Destroy America.

And since when is siding with Democrat Socialists a campaign Promise???

Yeah Trump should side with Pelosi and Schumer and give Amnesty to all Illegal Immigrants that would really teach those RINOs a lesson who is in charge. Oh wait he just did with DACA.

That promise on DACA now that he supports is that the one you are talking about?

Or Raising the National Debt for more Pork Spending is that the campaign promise you are talking about?

So go cry your river to Ryan and McConnell and see if working with them gets you any further than it did for anyone else. It does not sit easy with me that it took working with Pelousy and Schmukie on this one issue to have your two political heros finally sit up and take notice, but that is what it took. So if you are so blasted smarter than anyone else, have at it.

Did those RINOs loose their committee spots? No? Then yes it’s the GOP congresses fault for not keeping order.
