The entire Florida Peninsula and points north are poised to experience Hurricane Irma after the storm hugged Cuba's northern coastline. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Hurricane Irma's prolonged interaction with Cuba diminished its strength to Category 3.
Irma is forecast to increase in strength as it crosses the FL Straits. The Florida Keys experienced strong outer bands while Irma grazed the N Cuba coastline.

Finally caught up on the thread, and many thanks for all the great information posted!
I do not mean to sound sadistic, but I must say, it would not hurt my feelings at all, if Irma saw fit to flood the home of the Scientology cult of the face of the earth.(NOT Tampa, just the Scientology cult location IN Tampa)
Good to know.
Hope he is a-ok!
Did Shep just say they’re sending mortuary teams to the Keys?
130mph gust reported at a hospital in Miami. That is about 100 miles from Naples.
I thought the HQ was in Clearwater. Close enough, I guess.
That is not sadistic, but merciful.
My parents evacuated to Lakeland when it looked like it was going east. They are holed up in Holiday Inn express of Florida rd.
No idea, I don’t watch Fox, and especially Shep. Turned him off permanently once I saw him deal with Katrina.
5pm advisory out:
5:00 PM EDT Sun Sep 10
Location: 26.2°N 81.8°W
Moving: N at 14 mph

NHC now has it a Cat 2 hurricane with 110 mph winds.
Oh its gonna be some surge coming in soon, but NOLA is a different animal considering the city was already below sea level. And lets not forget those wonderful pols in NOLA who pocketed money throughout the years that were supposed to be for the levees and EIGHT major pumps were broken as the city’s drainage system which failed to reduce building rain and flood waters for over 12 hours.
But it was Bush’s fault.
And I don’t even like GWB.
Fox reporting that NWS has downgraded Irma to a Cat 2.
I’m in Venice FL...
Looks like the storm surge is going to really bad..
Just looked at the radar and it looks like the eye may be getting smaller..hard to tell
We hope it goes north so were on the east side..
Yes.
Same here. We put stuff away for thunderstorms.
Strong winds coming from the east/SE in Michigan. I swear that earlier today I could see odd, rolling clouds in the SE. Thought it might be due to Irma. We almost never have winds from that direction.
No he’s talking gusts. It hit Naples as a cat 2 I believe and was just officially downgraded to a cat 2 by NHC.
For some reason airports always report highest wind gusts...even in regular run of the mill bad thunderstorms.
That was a gust. Category is determine by sustained winds.
Have family in Melbourne. They could not afford to leave.
Could be because of all the open ground around them to allow a longer fetch of wind.
