148,000 Internet, TV, and phone customers lost service in storm’s wake. Tropical Storm Harvey has disrupted at least 17 emergency call centers and 320 cellular sites, and it has caused outages for more than 148,000 Internet, TV, and phone customers.

And during that time, most people were still able to communicate on their smartphones. Cell phone towers and networks go down even in good weather but there are redundancies in place. My aunt was able to speak to her friends in Marco Island this afternoon even when all the power was out there.

Multi-band receivers are nice to have but they are more of a 1970s thing. My sons laughed when I used to pull out my Grundig. Younger people today aren't going to be buying a multi-band radio receiver! Just isn't going to happen.

No one is arguing what is BETTER!

But I listened to a volunteer from Connecut relaying tornado warnings and weather updates ALL DAY LONG to people on Zello because they had a free app but didn’t have a $150 radio.

I’m listening to people with emergencies RIGHT NOW on Zello because they can’t get through to 911.

If you have dispatch experience there are some guys on those channels who have been disseminating information for 80 solid hours. Go help. It’s a free app.
