What if worst comes to worst with North Korea? China ‘must be ready’ for war on the peninsula

Beijing needs to come up with backup plans – either on its own or with Washington and Seoul – in case the crisis on the Korean peninsula escalates into conflict, a leading Chinese analyst has warned.

But other observers said it was still too early to discuss a post-war Pyongyang with other countries, insisting there is no sign of the North Korean regime falling.

In an article published in Australia-based online magazine East Asia Forum earlier this month, Peking University international relations professor Jia Qingguo called on China to work with the United States and South Korea on contingency plans.

Analysts said it was rare for such a subject to be raised so publicly by a Chinese academic. In his article, Jia said four major areas needed to be addressed: North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, an influx of refugees, restoration of social order, and post-crisis political arrangements on the peninsula.

“So far Beijing has resisted the idea for fear of upsetting and alienating Pyongyang. But, given recent developments, Beijing may have no better choice than to start talking with Washington and Seoul,” Jia wrote. “When war becomes a real possibility, China must be prepared.”

He said that if the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un fell, most likely as a result of a US military strike, either China or the United States should be ready to manage North Korea’s nuclear facilities to prevent the spread of the weapons.

A safety zone should be set up in northeast China to shelter North Korean refugees, and Beijing should talk to Washington about whether to accept a unified Korea.

My guess is that Rocket Man will be on the receiving end of some weapons that look like something out of science fiction, courtesy of the USAF, Air Force Space Command and the Navy.

The Chinese won’t know when the Norks will get hit but they probably are aware it will be all over very quickly. It may well be over before the Norks even realize that they are being attacked.

If Kim wasn’t delusional he’d be scurrying for any sort of deal that leaves him alive.

“Gone are the days of that spineless disciple of Bill Ayers and in his place is a guy who believes that the United States *solves* problems rather than causes them.”

Let’s not leave out ALL the presidents since FDR! Every last one of them kicked the North Korean Can down the road! They were all worthless as leaders in dealing with this long-festering world problem. Ditto for Iran from Carter on.

Hm. It does not sound like China intends to jump into a war between Norks and the West. Good judgment, but not entirely what one might expect at this preliminary stage.

What if worst comes to worst

We are slowly losing our language. The phrase should read: "If worse comes to worst."

Wasn’t that Clinton that brokered a deal to assure Ukrainian sovereignty in exchange for them handing their nukes to Russia?

China understands. China is doing what it can to damp this down and leash Kim. It would not do, loss of face and all that, for it to be a public operation.

China would like to be in shape to continue to flex those muscles if and after a military solution to the Nork puzzle is carried out.

TLR, do you happen to know what the South China Morning Post’s relationship with the PRC’s government is like? They don’t seem to shy away from criticizing Beijing, I read them often.

It is a Hong Kong newspaper which has been around well before Hong Kong became part of China. Chinese government seems to give it some leeway as long as it does not stray too far.
