The black liberal who argued for reparations and called President Donald Trump America's "first white president" is at it again but this time he is comparing Trump's election to the birth of post-Civil War white supremacy. This argument can fan the flames of unrest and lead to more racial violence in America. To realize just how explosive this claim really is, and to effectively debunk it, Americans have to understand his view of white supremacy at the heart of America and his deep pessimism about life itself.
"What this country really fears is black respectability, Good Negro Government," writes Ta-Nehisi Coates in his forthcoming book, We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy (which releases on October 3). Coates compares President Barack Obama's eight years in power to the brief period following the Civil War in which black leaders served in government, before whites kicked them out.
While Coates gets Trump tragically wrong, he gets most of his history right. After the Civil War, the Union imposed a period of Reconstruction on the defeated Southern states, and part of that program was ensuring that black people could vote and run for office. But Reconstruction ended, and when it did, angry whites did indeed prevent blacks from voting and running for office. Following the Civil War, black people really were "eight years in power."

Like Obama, Coates would never have been put on a pedestal had his skin been White. His meager “talents” would qualify as for a middling editorial ranter at HuffPost. Instead he is a vaunted superstar of liberal academia. So it was with Obama, who — had he been White — would never have gotten near the Senate, yet alone the presidency. He would have been laughed off the stage.
“Good Negro Government”
Does such a thing even exist? Certainly not in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Detroit, or Baltimore. Even if you somehow delude yourself into thinking Obama’s government was “good”, most of his administration was just as whitebread as every other administration.
Somewhere therge is a .45mm withe his name on it.
That's awfully small ...
So is his brain. And other parts. I think he invented that weird name as a way of compensating for something.
Good Negro Government? Like Coleman Young, Kwami Kilpatric and Marion Barry?
So “negro” is an acceptable term once again?
He is exaggerating the extent to which Reconstruction can be considered black rule. In fact blacks weren’t running the Southern governments—there was a coalition of Northern whites (”carpetbaggers”), Southern whites (”scalawags”) and blacks (mostly freedmen) but the whites were calling the shots. I think one or two states may have had a black majority in the legislature for a while. I think there was one black acting governor briefly in one state.
Obama gave us the lowest overall economic growth rate of any president in recorded history.
Now we find out that he also managed in his last full year in office to give us an 8.6% increase in the murder rate.

How much more good progressive government can we stand?
Wow! Who knew? “Good Negro Government,” eh?
I wish we could export some of it to North Korea, China, Russia, Cuba, etc. We need more foreign enemies that are as brilliant, efficient, righteous, etc., as “Good Brother Obama.” Imagine if Pyongyang were run like Baltimore? We’d have no worries about a nuke ever making it to the U.S.
I’d go further, and say South Africa was a better place under apartheid than it is now. Socialism has destroyed the country for all.
Just saying it used to be a first world nation, now plunging to third world status.
Seems he 'forgot' to mention it was white democrats doing the kicking and the black leaders were Republicans.
True.
When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
All Ta-Nehisi has is race, so everything looks like a race problem.
FWIW, The guy who wrote the article does have more in his toolbox than Ta-Nehisi.
Some of the responders -- not so much.
Good negro government is an oxymoron. It doesn’t exist
I don’t know about that. Look at countries run by black/brown and you will find socialism, tyranny, and ruin.
