Not too long ago, the British Tories were actually conservative. This meant that, among other things, they valued the individual and his rights. One of his most important rights was, the average Tory would've told you ten years ago, the "right" to be the master of his own body.
Well, those days belong to the past now. Today, British Prime Minister Theresa May announced that everyone will now be considered an organ donor unless they opt out of the system. This means, in effect, that the state will decide what will happen with your body when you die, unless you explicitly and loudly object.

In other words, the sanctity of the individual has been thrown onto the ash heap of history in England. That's bad enough, but what makes this even worse is the fact that this totalitarian, 1984-esque policy has been implemented by a supposedly conservative government.
As Donald Trump would undoubtedly say: Sad!

How can this be, isn’t this a violation of people’s rights? idk
I’m just happy we beat their arses back to the UK many centuries ago. Very strange people.
” But I’m not dead yet!”
I write on the back of my driver’s license, “Not an organ donor.”
Would that be sufficient to opt out in the U.K., I wonder?
Does the state then sell your stolen body parts for its own profit? How very ghoulish.
Quite the tyrant she is ..
Here in Illinois hospitals are now REQUIRED to ask families of those on deaths doorstep if they'll donate the organs of their loved ones. They target those who's chances of survival of strokes, heart attacks and aneurysms are slim specifically.
Been through it, I know of what I speak here.
This is just a half-step away from everyone being forced into organ "donation" by default without explicit opt-out.
Brits are subjects of the Crown.
Ever watch the movie “Heaven Can Wait” with Warren Beatty here an angel snatches him from his body prior to an accident when Beatty was not going to die. His body was destroyed so the angel had to help him find a new body suitable for him to enter and return to earth.
I died of meningitis, left my body, went to Heaven, and then returned to my physical body.
I will never be an organ donor as I don’t want to return to my body again and find that someone has harvested my organs and I can’t live in it again.
Thank you; I’m in Illinois and I will make my wishes more explicitly known to my family. I already have opted out on my driver’s license. Maybe that’s not enough?
“Does the state then sell your stolen body parts for its own profit? How very ghoulish.”
Some of these organs are quite expensive from what I understand, so the money goes into someone’s bank account.
Yes, it is very ghoulish.
“...and then returned to my physical body.”
I’m guessing it wasn’t for a long week-end. I know they want the organs quickly - but I can’t imagine that you were gone for too long of a time. Although my one daughter has the same fear - and didn’t check the donor box. Hey - “Your body, your choice!”
So what were your impressions of Heaven?
An old friend as he was dying had visions of heaven. He said the geology was really great (he was a geologist). One time he was just staring off and said “Beer”. I looked to where he was looking - nothing. “What was that Bob?” “Beer. There’s beer in heaven.”
I hope so!

“ But Im not dead yet!”
Yeah, hopefully they will euthanize the “corpse” before they begin the harvest. Sarc/
So the government claims ownership of their organs and just lets the people use them and care for them until needed elsewhere.
The people are like serfs - growing a crop for the government.
The next step will be to dictate to the people what they can or cannot do while taking care of the government’s property.
Will people be prosecuted for not living a healthy lifestyle?
For endangering organ health with bad diets or drinking too much?
And what happens when the government wants to ‘harvest’ their organ crop but the caretaker is still alive and not ready to die?
No it's not. I experienced this when my younger brother passed away from a massive brain aneurysm five years ago. The hospital had a team of people who's sole job it was, was to convince families to give up the organs and tissue of their loved ones as they were near death.
Talk about the worst possible time to pressure a family!
I don't know that there's a perfect answer to this question and how to spare your family I can only tell you what I'm doing.
As I'm divorced and have two sons (20 and 18) I don't want the decision to fall on them at such a young age, so I've given my older sister power of attorney over life and death matters for me with explicit written and notarized instructions as to what to do when I'm near death/dead.
When my younger brother passed it was left to his then barely 19 year old daughter as his oldest next of kin to make all the decisions. I cannot tell you how painful it was for my sister, youngest brother and I to be with her and help her through that. That kind of responsibility should never fall on someone so young and with so little life experience! That's why I gave power of attorney with notarized instructions to my sister.
The guilt my niece still feels to this day is crushing.
Of course the State has no business compelling people to do this. That said I will be an organ donor when I die and I urge my fellow Freepers to do likewise. You can save many lives.
We’ve come for your liver.
But I’m still using it.
I am an organ donor. Assumption that all are is not horrible, allowing those who wish to opt out seems reasonable
What about Orthodox Jews & Catholics?
