When I read Gone With The Wind, and Margaret Mitchell's description of the Northern ladies who moved into Atlanta during Reconstruction, who walked around acting all phony-concerned but who really didn't care a fig about actual Southerners, either black or white, I thought she was describing early liberals.
It was obvious that their behavior was what we would call "virtue signaling," even though Margaret Mitchell had never heard that term.

The Left of the 20th century was actually an outgrowth of the Republican Party. One of the founders of the GOP, publisher Horace Greeley, actually published articles by Karl Marx for years.
