The only person that I personally knew who was violently murdered was someone that I worked with. He was killed and then his place was burnt to the ground. Nice as could be, apparently he was gay, as the police later said that he frequented gay bars (but never solved the case). I had no clue regarding gayness at the time, just a great guy to know and work with. It still blows my mind that that he was murdered that way. I have close relatives that had a friend also killed in a similar way.
So yes, there is often a violent streak in some of these people. Plenty of violent straight people too, but they generally are in the lower classes of society.
Another aspect of this, is that - whether or not homosexuality is involved - when murder is exceptionally violent, particularly involving destruction of the head or face, you can be near certain that some form of intimate relationship was involved. Why? Because our personality is intimately connected with our face; and therefore is often the target of retribution.
