For all his faults Johnny Carson was:

a) actually funny
b) smart enough to distribute the political barbs in
all directions so as not to alienate any portion of
his audience.

who even watches TV anymore?

Old people.

My children have developed viewing habits that fully excludes broadcast and cable television. It is almost entirely YouTube and a lot of these YouTube personalities lean to the right. At the very least, they do not appeal to Hillary-voting snowflakes. This is half the reason YouTube is cracking down and "demonetizing" these channels, hiding them away where they'll be hard to find.

Agree. And Leno was pretty evenhanded until Obama was elected. Despite a wealth of material (I’ve been in 57 states, McCain did not make fun of my Muslim faith, the podium with the ‘seal’ that said Office of the President-Elect), Leno wouldn’t make jokes about Obama, saying ‘he just isn’t funny’. EVERYONE on Late Night completely sold out to the ‘protect Obama’ crowd and that is when Late Night truly died.

Totally agree with that. That night told us all that the money handlers in Hollyweird called off all negative comments about Zero.

Johnny Carson was going up against test patterns for a large portion of his career.

It’s entirely possible that Kimmel and Colbert can narrow-cast to an anti-Trump audience and come out bigger on the other side.

Colbert clearly wasn’t risking half his audience since his ratings have exploded since he went political in a big way. He became a place for an audience to gather.

Kimmel is interesting since you would think his audience from the Man Show years would lean towards Trump. But who knows?

Because your choice was Johnny Carson or......um.....a movie from 1962? I don’t even know what Carson’s competition was until Nightline showed up on the scene.

I remember watching Dick Cavett with my Great Grandmother...I was pretty young, but it seems he was pretty funny, too.

Good point. My first instinct when trying to learn a new skill is youtube. A co-worker and I were tasked to install a pre hung door to a small room we were framing. Neither he nor I had ever installed a door. We watched a youtube video on my smartphone and that door is still smooth as silk 4 years later.

Firearms reviews, appliance fixes, gardening, prepping, its all there.

I quit watching late night television when I realized I no longer cared to watch the celebrity guests who were on to discuss their latest movie I wasn't going to see, or their TV show I wasn't going to record, or their CD I wasn't going to buy.

It had nothing to do with the host.

That was then. I'll happily add the host to the list now.

“Now my only entertainment is watching a Trump press conference.”

My favorite entertainment is watching the network and cable coverage of election night.

It never gets old.

A few weeks ago, I was watching the Decades channel airing of the January 20, 1969 episode of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Their opening monologue was about how their friend Richard Nixon was sworn in as President a mere five hours ago. They then cut to a Burbank campaign appearance Rowan and Martin did with Nixon earlier in the campaign.

The clip showed them joking with Nixon at a rally. At the end, Rowan closed with his trademark "Say goodnight, Dick," and Martin said "I don't think you should call him 'Dick,' he was the Vice-President!" and Rowan replied "I meant you, Dick..." "Oh, goodnight Dick," and Nixon was busting out laughing.

I watched this thinking I can't recall a time since this when a prime-time comedian is standing with a Republican and calling him "friend."

You are so correct. Youtube now knows to offer me a variety of election night videos when I sign on. My favorite moment is always when Wisconsin is called. That is when I knew for sure.

Dick Cavett and Merv Griffin both tried to go up against Carson, and failed. He generally ended up competing with old movies, reruns of Mannix, Hawaii Five-O, etc.

That’s why discussing his ratings is pointless.

It was Carson or nothing in 1974.
