The problem is not just with this absurd woman, but with the fact that the press ran with her bogus story and made it the story of the day. Trump did a good thing - he took the time to make a personal call to a military widow (which is NOT required by protocol) and offered his condolences. Somehow, this got spun into the claim that Trump is callous and self-absorbed, almost as if he had taunted the widow.

The focus of the criticism was that had Trump started off by saying that the widow's husband knew what he was getting into when he joined the military, i.e., that he knew that it was dangerous. This is just a commonplace fact, not an insult. What was he supposed to say - "You're son was a blithering idiot who didn't know what he was doing"? Trump then went on to say that prior awareness of the risks does not eliminate the pain and sorrow of the soldier's death.

The members of the press once again demonstrated that they are complete a**holes.
