Trump Signs Order Allowing Recall of Retired Air Force Pilots

October 20, 2017 10:16 PM

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will allow the Air Force to bring back to active duty as many as 1,000 retired pilots to address a pilot shortage.

A Pentagon spokesman, Navy Cmdr. Gary Ross, said the Air Force is short about 1,500 pilots.

“The pilot supply shortage is a national-level challenge that could have adverse effects on all aspects of both the government and commercial aviation sectors for years to come,” Ross said.

25-pilot cap removed

Under current law, the Air Force is limited to recalling 25 pilots. Trump’s order, which amends a post-9/11 emergency declaration, removes that cap for the Air Force, as well as other branches of the military.

Ross said the secretary of Defense is expected to allow the secretary of the Air Force to recall up to 1,000 retired pilots for up to three years.

As it stands now you can be recalled until you have a total of 30 years Total Military Service. It would be interesting though. Let’s see? 37 years and 1 month in grade as a Chief?

Hell, I’ve even forgotten how to use the F-word.

Drink a couple beers, watch some Obama pressers, it comes back easy.

Just wait until we hear the Fighter Pilots Benevolent Association (FPBA), Trump will have hell to pay for treating labor this way.

I suspect many would jump at the chance to get back into the game if the cause was right and we fight to win.

I suspect you're right but, with the crew that's running things, I don't think we've got much of a chance.

“I always figured it was possible.

Remember the German army in WWII were putting 15 year olds and 60+ year olds on the front line.

There are a lot of rear echelon jobs that a 69 year old 1Lt could do better than most.”

In the last year or so of WW2 my wife’s great uncle was drafed into a flak 88 unit for defense of Berlin. He was 65.

Just goes to show that retiring on half of one’s base pay at 20 years comes with a “condition” - subject to recall to active duty at the convenience of the government. And for officers after separation into the IRR if they don’t retire.

I have a deceased distant cousin who was of my great grandfather’s generation who served from 1900 to the mid-1930s going from enlisted to getting a commission in Infantry in 1917 and finally retiring as a Major. He was recalled to active duty during WWII to fill a stateside Army billet at March Army Air Field and re-retired at the end of the war. This information is from my father, who was also assigned to March AAF during WWII.

IIRC, mandatory removal from flight status is age 60, also mandatory retirement age for commercial pilots.

I came back into the USAR as a CWO at age 46, having passed a flight physical though I later went into a DS maintenance unit. At age 57 I was informed CH-47 pilots were needed (I flew Hueys in Vietnam) and got my up slip & a slot.

But...preflighting a Chinook means climbing on top many feet above the ground, which I did - once. Said thanks but no thanks and went back to my old unit. Retired at 62.

As for recall at 67 or later, I believe that applies only to physicians

I’ll keep you all posted. My buddy, the ex fighter pilot, he also has big multi engine experience thanks to the airlines he flew for when he retired. He has plenty of experience in both, he retired a full Col. He’s kept current, still flies - a kit plane that is acrobatic, pulling multiple gs whenever he can slip away for a couple of hours. (I’m having a blast flying with him and learning ACM.) So if anyone is a good candidate, he is. Oh, he’s got combat experience from the middle East too....

All the USAF has to do is assign enlisted men to fly drones. That will free enough officer pilots to deal with the shortage.

Your buddy needs to keep a packed bag at the front door. Man, he would be good to have as a wing man.

I’m certain they will know exactly how that works or they wouldn’t be recalling them....I don’t think this is just ‘retired’ with 20 yrs in either.

That’s how I’m looking at it. Especially since those retired have a strong understanding of the history and peoples.... Good move as I see it.

Yeah, I’m having dinner with him tonight - going to tell him not to answer the phone if he doesn’t recognize the # on caller ID! ;-) Actually, he’s the kind of guy that if they ask, he’ll go - no hesitation.

They will fill all non-flight duty billets freeing up all jet jocks to jockey jets.
