Big Studios Cutting Losses This Weekend, Pulling Flops From Theaters Earlier Than Usual
Showbiz ^ | October 21,2017 | Roger Friedman

It’s a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is “working,” and the studios can’t afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. They’re pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.

This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on “Blade Runner” after three tough weeks. They’ve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuve’s beautiful film by 855. So far, “Blade Runner” has made just $66 million. Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.

Warner’s isn’t alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruise’s “American Made” from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews haven’t helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasn’t available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after “The Mummy” and other flops. With both studios, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived “Flatliners.” With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. They’re retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving “Flatliners” to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.

Also just about dead is the much praised “Battle of the Sexes,” Fox Searchlight couldn’t get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. I’m actually dumbfounded that it’s made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And “Battle” was supposed to yield some awards action.

Warner’s, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their “Geostorm” is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their “Lego Ninja” movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks.

Do you think, even for one moment, that Hollywood might wonder if they are losing business because of the “talent” that can’t shut their fat mouths for one second about how much they hate anyone who votes different than they do?

Nah, me either. They get a pittance from me in the form of the occasional DVD. I hope they suffer.

Looks like the theater industry will be dead soon.

We can only hope.

I hated Spider-Man. I’m paying money for #BLM agitation?

Apparently modern viewers reject competent cinema.

Prefer movies that are cartoonish.

The only entertaining moment was Marisa Tomei at the very end.

Still, I didn’t recognize her. When the credits were rolling, I turned my sister and said.... Marisa Tomei was in this?

I still envision her from My Cousin Vinney(one hell of a good movie).

So where is the money going?

Their parents are now asking for rent to stay in the basement. It's how the new retirement plan is being funded.

If they pull the losers what will they put into those theaters? It's not like they have any blockbusters that demand multiple screens so you can have the 7:00, 7:15 and 7:30 showings.

Blade Runner 2049 was old school SF that dwelt on timeless subjects - no overt SJW stuff anywhere that I could see. Same as the original.

The named cast was 100% white I think, and I’m surprised it hasn’t caught flak for that.

Tom Cruise may be losing some fans due to Scientology and age. He is just not that big of a draw.
Like you say, people want to be entertained, not lectured. I wanted to see Murder on the Orient Express because I loved the original. I will wait for it to be on TV. Too many actors on there I cannot support.

“Apparently modern viewers reject competent cinema. Prefer movies that are cartoonish.”

Maybe, but it also might be that not much creatively new is being done. There's clearly a Hollywood ‘groupthink’, and that type of conformity doesn't lend itself to creativity. I heard the new Blade Runner is fantastic, and I want to see it, but even if it is great - it's still a new film predicated on an old one.

Was talking to a brother-in-law last night, he told me ticket prices are around $22. I gasped, thought they were high in the low teens. Who the heck wants to pay that much!

We are happy getting our movies off the Internet and watching on the computer monitor or streaming to our big screen TV. A lot cheaper. I notice that Apple iTunes Store is offering a lot of 99 cent rental movies lately, and doubled the time to watch to 48 hours. You can repeat it as much as you want in 48 hours. A lot cheaper than movie theaters, just 99 cents. I get other movies on Netflix and elsewhere, some really good stuff out there to watch in the comfort of home. Who pays $22 for movie tickets?

Yesterday I thought I might like to go to a movie, and I looked at the current offerings. NOTHING looked interesting.
