Its a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is working, and the studios cant afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. Theyre pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.
This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on Blade Runner after three tough weeks. Theyve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuves beautiful film by 855. So far, Blade Runner has made just $66 million. Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.
Warners isnt alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruises American Made from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews havent helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasnt available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after The Mummy and other flops. With both studios, it wasnt for lack of trying.
The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived Flatliners. With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. Theyre retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving Flatliners to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.
Also just about dead is the much praised Battle of the Sexes, Fox Searchlight couldnt get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. Im actually dumbfounded that its made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And Battle was supposed to yield some awards action.
Warners, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their Geostorm is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their Lego Ninja movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks.

How did American Assassin do relative to projection? Did it gross enough to keep the series going.
I just watched the trailer and you’re right. They fouled it up.
Tom Cruise was cool in the 90’s...forget today. I know it was close to 20 years now, but that couch jumping hurt Tom. I won’t go to a Tom Cruise movie for free. He is the Dean Scream of Hollywood. Just too weird for Americans today.
So where is the money going?
$900.00 a month Bronze Plans is my guess.

Gun sales are still at record levels.
I'm sure the millennials will remember that, too, when their parents need assisted living and the kids are to absorbed in their own lives to open up their basements.

Just got back from watching Blade-runner 2049. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys going to the movies. It is a movie that deserves to be seen on the big screen.
It is a visually rewarding film, particularly in the first hour. Design, sets, lighting, special effects and cinematography (again primarily in the first hour) are worthy of Oscar nominations. Sound and soundtrack, not so much.
The performances by the leads were solid, though sad to say, this film is too big for Harrison Ford at this stage of his career. (Or perhaps, like Nora Desmond, he has remained big while the movies have gotten small.)
The highest quality acting came from the supporting cast, in particular Carla Juri. Such a marvelous performance in a small part! Truly memorable.
Kudos also to Dave Bautista in the kind of role he was meant to play, and even also to Lenny James who sets aside his usual cool competence and showed the courage to undertake a less than flattering portrayal of a less than likeable character.
Sylvia Hoeks owes half her paycheck to Tatiana Maslany. Its not that she didnt do well in her role. She did a superb job. But the look, if not the personality, of her character was ripped directly from Maslanys portrayal of Allison Hendrix.
MacKenzie Davis disappointed. Love her to pieces in Halt and Catch Fire, but here she was grossly underutilized.
Going out on a limb here and predicting: Ana de Armas is going to get a Best Supporting Actress nomination...and win.

Geostorm is a disaster flick about global warming that looks awful (like ‘2012’ bad).
Unfortunately true. Did you know there was a short anime video done as a "prequel" to the new Blade Runner film? It's set in the time span between the original film and the new one. It made me wish they'd just kept rolling with it in that genre - there seems to be more serious sci-fi-fi headed that way now. The anime short is on YouTube.
I went to see Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale back in March. It was absolutely worth waking up early on a Saturday to go see. Lots of fellow nerds that didn’t want to disturb it for others.
But the Dragonball Z movie a few years ago, there were loud high school kids in there. I wanted to yell at them.
The core of a story that reaches your heart is a morality play. Now that Hollywood has abandoned morality, they have no writers that can comprehend a plot line deeper than a comic book.
The only option is rewrites, lust and... comic books.
I read there’s another season coming in November ... I think the third, but it is the first week of November.
Proly waiting for streaming.
I haven’t set foot in a theater since Zero Dark Thirty and before that it was over 12 years since I had been in a theater.
After getting my ears blown out watching ZDT and the constant cellphone ringing and audience yammering, I’ll most likely never go again.
Most people haven’t given Billie Jean King a thought since that publicity stunt back in 1973. Why someone expected this to be a draw for new audiences, I couldn’t tell you.
They may as well had made a Rock-U-Mentary about Helen Reddy.
“I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar!”. Kind of dated and long surpassed, IMO.
“Shame about Bladerunner. It is indeed a beautiful film.”
Yes it was. I was impressed. It did justice as a return, even the music score was great. I personally heard a Mongolian throat singer once, that was a nice touch. I saw it at noon on a Friday. It was a private viewing, there was only two of us there. It’s hard to believe I saw the first one 35 years ago.
fwiw, a “review” at post 49
Yes. That's outlandish.
That's equivalent to four bottles of wine. Maybe five.
Does that mean that my 45 year boycott of Hollywood is finally working?
