Its a bizarre season in Hollywood. Almost nothing is working, and the studios cant afford to waste any more money hoping things will turn around. Theyre pulling flops from theaters earlier than usual.
This weekend, for example, Warner Bros. is putting out a white flag on Blade Runner after three tough weeks. Theyve cut the number of theaters showing Denis Villeneuves beautiful film by 855. So far, Blade Runner has made just $66 million. Audiences have not clamored to it. And now, week by week, Warners will quietly take it away.
Warners isnt alone. Universal is pulling Tom Cruises American Made from 539 locations after a month in release. The Doug Liman directed thriller has made just $43 million. Good reviews havent helped push Cruise fans to theaters. One problem was lack of promotion since Cruise wasnt available. Also, audiences may have just soured on him after The Mummy and other flops. With both studios, it wasnt for lack of trying.
The biggest decease (de-crease, but pun intended here) is for the revived Flatliners. With just $16 million in the till, Sony would be better off paying people to see this turkey. Theyre retreating from 1,433 theaters this weekend, leaving Flatliners to breathe on its own. It will be completely dead by Sunday.
Also just about dead is the much praised Battle of the Sexes, Fox Searchlight couldnt get anyone to go see it despite great reviews and excellent marketing. Im actually dumbfounded that its made just $11 million. FS is killing off 849 screens. Ouch! And Battle was supposed to yield some awards action.
Warners, meantime, is facing more trouble than the other studios. Their Geostorm is going to be a disaster this weekend. And their Lego Ninja movie is leaving 951 theaters after $52 million and five weeks.

Hasnt it been sitting in the can for years now? Those movies get dumped on the market and never do anything.
MAGA!!!!!
Winning, winning, we keep winning!!!
you helped me decide to go.
Glad I saw the news here about it ending in theatres soon.
Last three weeks I have been binge watching 24 on Amazon. just as good as anything else and I don’t have to go to the movie theater.
Blacklist is not a Netflix production.
It is NBC.
But I do understand what you are saying. Netflix and Amazon are doing some great productions.
Amazon’s Man in the High Tower is getting great reviews.
I just can’t bring myself to give any money to Amazon.
Flatliners.
Had no idea it had been remade. Not that good originally.
I never knew about Flatliners first run in theaters, saw it later on VHD, thought it was a wild, wild movie. But I thought it was a pretty little indie movie at the time despite names that became big later... who would have ever thought they’d remake THAT? I wouldn’t have.
Its an unbelievable joke that they remade Flatliners. It stars that skank Ellen Page. Im waiting for the remake of Cool as Ice.
Time to pivot.
People still watch movies.
They just don’t go to theaters for releases.
There’s plenty I would have paid good money to see first day, but won’t go to a theater for.
I’d pay $20 to own Blade Runner 2049 right now. Same with John Wick 2 when it arrived.
But with the release model, I can’t see it until it shows up in Redbox for $1.
The money is still there.
The demand is still there.
But many just won’t do theaters any more. Period.
I’m not shelling out upwards of $50 (tickets, sitter, etc) just to sit in a lousy theater once.
Put it on iTunes opening day for $20 and I’ll buy.
Otherwise they get a buck via Redbox.
Pivot. Change the release schedule already.
We pretty much hate you and yours, Hollywood. And weve been waiting for a long time for you to realize this.
True, I may watch Mr. Tom Cruise on my Netflix or Amazon plan, I don’t boycott him, and he has some good content, but the days of plunking down hard cash on the barrelhead to see a Tom Cruise movie are ovah.
But comic books were always morality plays... anymore not so much I guess.
LOL! Perhaps because most Americans know the entire "plot" is a fraud. Billy Jean didn't "beat" Riggs. What a hilarious joke Feminwood has become
Why should Americans with 65” OLED TVs and surround sound spend big bucks to have their sneakers stick to the floor of a theater packed with Dindus who won’t shut up?
I get a NETFLIX sub for eleven bucks a month and it is in their list ... I just assumed.
I am very hesitant to give those perverted and incompetent left wingers any of my hard earned money for their product. They want to be political and like relevant? Fine. But your products will continue to be unviewed by my family. FU.
Student loans and experiences that aren’t just receptive. I have been going to top golf here recently. Lots of youngish folks having fun.
Yeah, now comic book movies are all whizz bang, no soul.
My wife and I have a big screen tv on which we only watch movies. We also have a SONY sound system. We can rent dvds from our local store/redbox, or we can rent them for $4.99 on Amazon Prime. And we can watch them from the comfort of our sofa/recliners with the food of our choice.
Contrast that with the theater. You have to go out. You park the car. Wait in line. Pay $25.00 for treats. Find a seat. Sit through commercials and political/environmental commentaries. After an hour, the movie begins. Then you get to endure Tyrone, Pepe, Loquitia and Rosa all talking, and texting, and talking while texting.
Only a fool would waste money on that. The movie industry will find its legs. But theaters are dying.
