If true they screwed over their one consistent ally throughout this entire mess. Kurds are Sunnis. Assad and Iran, Russian partners, are shiite.

Um, take a look in Iraq and how the Kurds were treated by their “allies” there and then put yourself in the shoes of Syrian Kurds dealing with the same “allies”. There aren’t any good guys in any of this, including the US.
Well, strictly speaking Assad is Alawite, not orthodox Shi'ite. As for the Kurds, while the majority are Sunni, a large number are Shi'ite.
So the situation is not as simple as you have painted it.
