Yuli Gurriel, one of the key hitters for the Houston Astros, was suspended for five games without pay at the start of the 2018 season after television cameras caught him making a gesture and mouthing a word with racial overtones during Friday’s game.

Commissioner Rob Manfred announced the suspension at 1:05 p.m. PDT during a news conference in Houston after he met with Gurriel on Saturday before the Astros were to play the Dodgers in Game 4 of the World Series.

Gurriel also will have to undergo sensitivity training.

Yes, but we’re all quite enlightened around here now.....

Suspend now! No! Take away his home run! No! Astros must forfeit the game! No! Astros must forfeit the Series! No!

Off with his head!

Or maybe they’re just Dodger fans. (OK, off with his head AND forfeit the Series. And tear down a statue.)

Exactly. He did it in the dugout. If he did it rounding the bases, different story.

Nothing but the PC police extending their reach.

It’s a terrible ruling. He broke the rules in the Series that’s when the punishment should happen. And if his team loses the Series because of it too bad. It’s the inverse of common sense, it’s rewarding negative behavior. The NBA was right, the MLB is wrong.

Without the audio of what he is saying to his team mates, the video is sort of ‘out of context’.

Some media needs to find a lip reader to determine what he said while making the jesture.

There was a semi-intelligent discussion about it on FB. He's Cuban, in his mid-30s and didn't defect to the US until February 2016. Some reports say he doesn't speak English and the "slanted eye" gesture might have been a way to show his frustration with the Japanese player. Giving the guy some space, it does seem that he got to the US and was immediately thrust into the MLB world. Some training in cultural adaptations might have been appropriate when he, and others new to the country, arrive.

The harsh penalty, but not affecting the WS, seems fair. It might be a silver lining for MLB that they get to show their firmness with a player before black racists ruin that sport, too.

At least he’s not a pitcher. I always have to laugh when they “suspend” pitchers, nobody ever does the math. Half the time it’s a 4 game suspension so the guy doesn’t even lose a start.

Can some explain that clip to me?

It's okay. I'm super racist so I'll explain.

They guy with the goofy hair pictured above hit a homer off the Dodger pitcher, who is a chino. When he got to the dugout he did the "chinky chinky chinaman" thing where you pull your eyes to the side mimicking the slant eyes of the oriental people.

A couple of other observations: the MLB ruling let the public know racism against Asians is not k. Also, Yu’s statement was pretty classy, didn’t get caught up in self-pity.

If this kid is going to live and play in the politically-correct USofA he better keep his antics to himself. Maybe accepted in Cuba but certainly not here. The pitcher was very understanding and wrote a very classy reply it seemed and was willing to just let it be a learning situation. IMHO, suspending him for 5 games next season and requiring sensativity training is STUPID!!!

With the pussies we have running the game now Ty Cobb would never have played a second season.

Saw another article where this guy apologized through an interpreter. (Spanish)

And the Dodger made his own statement. Through an interpreter. (Japanese)

“America’s past-time”
