I must have missed the time warp. We are back in my childhood in the South.
We called these “shotgun” shack because you could fire a shotgun through the front door and hit everybody all the way to the back door.
This is history being re-purposed to a generation that forgot it.

There are still a few low income shotgun shacks in Jacksonville, FL. I drove down a street of them when I went to the Department of Revenue building.

My wife and I stayed at the
Shack Up Inn, in Clarksdale Ms, which, among other things rents what are essentially 'shotgun shacks'. It's a Holiday Inn for white trash. (grin) We loved it. Went into town at night for some blues, and hung out on the front porch during the day chatting with the neighbors. There was an interesting mix of 'neighbors' when we were there. Some folks from New Zealand, and a couple from Germany. The neat thing was that it was the most natural thing to sit out on the porch talking with folks you'd never met. Bring lots of Off if you go though, or you'll lose a pint of blood an hour.
