“Both of these accidents were preventable and the respective investigations found multiple failures by watch standers that contributed to the incidents, said Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson. “We must do better.”

It’s been a little expensive gutting our military branches and making sure our soldiers and sailors get their sex-change operations, and have safe places to play!

Thanks, 0bama!

Well if they would shitcan “diversity” and “affirmative action” and a host of other stupid social engineering BS and get back to serious sailing of warships and making war, they might improve their success rate. In the interim, let’s just call em “The Keystone Navy” because that’s what the track record indicates.

Not spending enough time on seamanship and too much time on computer modules on diversity.

The bridge was under-manned in a moderately-congested shipping lane; the OOD was driving the ship at a fairly high rate of speed (20 kts); there was no situational awareness demonstrated by the bridge team, and no communications between them and the CIC watchstanders; those operating the radar screens didn't understand how to adjust or use them properly. The OOD had several close CPAs leading up to the collision, and continually failed to call the Captain to the bridge. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

The OOD should practically be court-martialed, but the CO should've never allowed them to drive the ship on their own. I speculated quite a bit based on the early reports of this accident; after reading the final report, I can't believe the sheer incompetence that permeated throughout this command.

Well no shit Dick Tracey.

The US DOD needs to stop trying to create social justice politically correct gender neutral/neutered warriors, and create some ACTUAL warriors, who kill the enemy and break their shit with the ruthless efficiency that we have come to know and love.

“who kill the enemy and break their shit”

Heck man, don’t get ahead of yourself into that graduate level stuff. We should start with them knowing HOW TO DRIVE A FAKIN BOAT.

Which is PRECISELY what sane people on this site, especially the salty ones, were saying from the very beginning.

But for some reason, some folks must, must attached a conspiracy theory to everything that does not fit their preconceived notions.

Good post Lou,

As lead navigator, QM2, on a destroyer many, (many) years ago, this just makes me crazy.

Too damn much dependence on technology and not enough looking through binos and not enough basic training.

20 kts in a congested seaway.

Dereliction of Duty. Recklessness.

In the olden days we would never go above 12kts anywhere near ships not on our precise heading.

Hell, we would transit the Pacific at 16kts.

Those sitting RADAR in CIC didn’t even know how to read the screens. And there was no functional communication between them and the Bridge watch.

No wonder ComSeventhFlt lost his job.

Where are the Courts Martials?!?!?!?!

"Hell, we would transit the Pacific at 16kts."

You could get 16kts using sails?

No, that was with the oars ... which was fine until the Captain wanted to water-ski.
