Venezuela teeters on brink of default
Yahoo News ^ | November 8, 2017 | Maria Isabel SANCHEZ

Longstanding fears of a Venezuela debt default crystallized Wednesday, as the political crisis engulfing the sinking OPEC state deepened with a meeting set at the UN Security Council and the EU eyeing an arms embargo.

Investors were bracing for what looked to be an inevitable "credit event" that analysts said could arrive within days -- before a "refinancing and restructuring" of the debt called for by President Nicolas Maduro.

The socialist thugs running Venezuela have bankrupted what was once the most prosperous country in Latin America.

Children are starving. There is no food and no medicine. Armed government thugs assault innocent people every day.

Human suffering is everywhere.

Fusion GPS, the same Fusion GPS paid by Clinton to produce lies about Trump, gets paid to help the thugs in charge in Venezuela.

Any student of history could have seen this coming, as Venezuela is now following the path all previous Democracies have taken. An 18th Century English Historian, Sir Alexander Tytler Fraser, warned that a democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a dictatorship.

$23 billion is owed to China, according to estimates by private consultancies.

That is probably a gross underestimate. Bloomberg has that debt at $62 billion as of last July. Other sources put that on the high side, but only the principals appear to know for sure. Venezuela is behind on the oil shipments that constitute payment and there have been complaints of late that the quality of the oil shipped is too low to use. Venezuela's position has been "well, give us another loan so we can straighten out the refining", which, given the propensity of past loans to end up in private pockets due to corruption, the Chinese are understandably reluctant to agree to.

Nevertheless, $8 billion in debt service come due with $9 and a fraction billion on hand and it's just about all over. It's a little hard to see how restructuring this is going to do anything more than delay the inevitable.

One thing we should brace ourselves for is around 600,000 starving Venezuelans storming our Southern border.

Yep, that’s gotta be the reason. Bernie told me that in a dream just the other day. And I read something along the those same lines about the Soviet Union. Karl Marx was a swell guy, and so was Lenin. But then that brute Stalin came along, and ruined what would have been a socialist paradise.

On the other hand, some people hold to this saying: “After Lenin comes Stalin”. (All socialist countries must eventually become brutal dictatorships.)

If such a collapse occurred, would Venezuelans notice any change to their quality of life? Can it get any worse?

A rightwing oligarchy living mostly off one resource (oil) replaced by a leftwing oligarchy left holding the bag due to the plunge in oil prices. Plenty of blame to go around.

Venezuela once has a large middle class and the highest standard of living in Latin America.

Now the people are starving.

The blame is entirely on Chavez and his gang of thieving thugs.
