11 year old Elliot Clark killed this charging grizzly with a shotgun in Alaska in July of 2017. He used a 12 gauge shotgun.
The first shot was ineffective, with bird shot. The second shot was a perfectly placed slug in middle of the nose. The third shot was to the shoulder. It is likely both would have been fatal. There were powder burns on the bears mouth from the third shot. The fourth shot was an insurance shot after the bear was down.
PENDROY A bird hunter shot and killed a grizzly bear five miles east of Pendroy Saturday. Pendroy is about 80 miles northwest of Great Falls.
According to Mike Madel of Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, the hunter shot the adult female grizzly in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun.
The bear ran off. Then next day, the bear was found, dead.

Parks Canada keeps a close eye on all bears these days and removes any that wander too close to the townsite. However they estimate that some 700 bears inhabit the area so hiking trails are posted and hikers advised to carry bear spray and bells to warn off the bears. My last hike we encountered a black bear and he ran off once he spotted us. Be bear wise and you will really enjoy hiking in the Banff Lake Louise area.

These inexperienced hikers wandered into bear 148’s territory and their dog was not leashed causing the bear to chase them off. The encounter caused Park Wardens to capture the young female Griz and and move her. she subsequently roamed out of park boundaries and was legally shot and killed. That is why I personally do not like to see the killing of a bear sensationalized.
Why didn't he just call the police?
The grizzly was definitely charging - That slug that hit the bear in the nose was an entry shot.
While a handgun is better than nothing, I would never choose it for bear defense.
12 gauge, 3in mag with 00 or slugs is the tool of choice.
...Wow. I would have bet money that bird shot in the face would do squat to a charging grizzly bear...
Biirshot at 3 feet leaves a gigantic hole.
Do the powder burns imply the bear was pretty darn close? That's pretty ballsy of that boy, but what are you going to do after you piss off a bear? Cower?
On humans also, which is why my home defense 38 Special has bird shot in the first two cylinders, ball in the rest.

First, because the shot charge is very small (100 grains) less than 1/4 ounce or 1/5 of a 12 gauge standard load.
Second the short, rifled barrel of a .38 revolver imparts spin to the charge, causing it to open much more rapidly than even a cylinder bore in a shotgun.
I suggest that you pattern your chosen loads at 5 and 10 feet on paper or on gallon milk jugs of water.
Here is a test that was done on shot loads. The test was well done, IMHO.

Short stroked my 870 once
Worst jam I ever had
Young Clint Eastwood didn’t panic class all the way.
Beeswax and bird-shot add up to a MacGyvered slug giving tens-of-yards in effective range.
Yes. Another “home brewed” slug is the “cut shell”.
Interesting video. Thanks.
I’m concerned about shooting in the dim/dark confines of a bedroom at 2 a.m. Don’t want a ball cartridge exiting the house and hitting a neighbor. I use Hornady Home Defense for backup rounds. Not concerned about daylight as I wear a .380 Ruger (semi-rural area).
The only hunting I’ve done is predator hunting. Coyotes, wolves, Islam etc, so I just load for that.
If I am going to hunt something else, I’d carry a designated self defense firearm.
Lol, what a contrast. Good observation.
I have a new Mossberg that jammed right out of the box.
It was such a common problem that they had a “fix” all ready to go
Installed it. Still jams. Screwed. FU Mossberg.
I agree. And how does a bear get a 12 gauge in the first place?
Rim shot!
You might consider a pre-fragmented round like the Glaser safety slug.

With a Model 12 Winchester, you can hold down the trigger and it will fire with each pump. Also has a bayonet mount. :)
