The leak was detected along a stretch of the pipeline about 35 miles south of a pumping station in Marshall County, South Dakota.

TransCanada estimates the pipeline leaked 5,000 barrels of oil, or about 210,000 gallons, before going offline. The company said it's working with state regulators and the Pipelines and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to assess the situation.

The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources heard about the leak at about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, ABC affiliate KSFY reported.

Hopefully they aren’t dismissing the possibility of this being the work of some enviro-wacko individual or group.

“A total of 210,000 gallons of oil leaked Thursday from the Keystone Pipeline in Marshall County, South Dakota, the pipeline’s operator, TransCanada, said.”

‘Sabotage?’

Those responsible for the spill should be prosecuted.

“...Bad welds?...”

Knowing the 3rd party testing and NDE requirements for DOT pipelines, I seriously doubt it is bad welds. I would suspect sabotage long before bad welds, especially on a new line like this and with this hearing coming up next week. Yeah, it reeks of sabotage. IF they can find there perp, the charges should go to the max allowed.

Bingo - I refuse to believe it is anything else. I can't imagine it being incompetence - which would be the only other expiation, IMO.

This pipeline has had leak problems for some time now. Not sure
what the problems are and why they can’t get a grip on them.

Keystone Leak Worse Than Thought

Nearly 17,000 gallons of oil has leaked in South Dakota since Saturday,
pipeline owner TransCanada says – up from the 187 gallons the company
initially reported to federal authorities. ....

After being commissioned in 2010, it reportedly recorded 35 leaks in its
first year alone, including a spill of 21,000 gallons of oil in North Dakota.

Sabotage?

The earth will recover. Damage will not be everlasting. These leaks are less “ultimate” issues than they are always made out to be. Bad? Yes. Not so bad in the long run.

@Demkicker: dhs12345 deserves the credit for mentioning sabotage first on the thread.

Maybe the Indian spirits did it.

“Sabotage”.........I refuse to believe it is anything else.”.

I understand there is an important decision coming in a few weeks regarding this same pipeline. My what a coincidence to have such a disaster just before that important date.
