The Trump administration says we have to kill elephants to help save them. The data says otherwise.

Supporters of trophy hunting say that permit fees from the practice, which can run into the tens of thousands of dollars in the case of large game like elephants, can be put toward conservation efforts that help bolster the populations of endangered animals.

In part, that's the logic behind the Trump administration's reversal of an Obama-era ban on importing African elephant trophies from Zimbabwe.

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has made a finding that the killing of African elephant trophy animals in Zimbabwe, on or after January 21, 2016, and on or before December 31, 2018, will enhance the survival of the African elephant,” according to a notice posted Friday in the federal register. But if the logic of killing elephants to save them strikes you as questionable, you're not alone

I hear ya.

When it comes to elephants and whales, they’re such amazing creatures, I hate to see them hunted. I also hate to see dolphins lost to huge fishing ship operations.

I’m not generally into the Leftist eco efforts, but I don’t want to see elephants or whales hunted to their eventual extermination.

If anything, I’d like to see species like the woolly mammoth brought with gene or clone manipulation.

As long as there is some demand for elephant parts or they are considered a nuisance, they will be killed until they are gone. The real answer is to cull the human herd back to say, 1860 levels.

Maybe the Madagascar plague will do the trick.

A ‘Running Man’ of poachers vs. hunters?! Not that I wouldn’t pay to watch, but...what could go wrong?! /s

Been done before - look up 'Bushman hunting license'.

The overall herd count is misleading. The truth is found in comparing countries with regulated hunting with countries where no hunting is allowed. The herds are thriving with regulated hunting.

The parks the protect the Elephants would not exist without hunting money.

Exactly. I once had that conversation with a south African safari guide. He absolutely confirmed it

Do people not understand the term “management?” It applies to everything in the environment-water, animals, all other resources-to keep things balanced so no species goes extinct for lack of resources like food. There are seasons on game animals-even on wolves in Alaska-because wildlife has to be managed even there.

I was raised on a ranch-all livestock and game is managed to kep it thriving-livestock animals that don’t breed well or at all are not kept and fed as pets-they are culled from herds and end up on your table, or are sold to provide meat for someone else’s-that includes chickens, turkeys, etc-deer, elk, moose herds are culled, bears are hunted-it is called “hunting season” and it is wildlife management and is necessary for animals in a herd to be healthy and thrive-but I suppose that makes too much sense for people like Chelsea Clinton-who has never had to even manage a litter of puppies, much less livestock or game-to understand-so why doesn’t she adopt a few elephants and keep them on the lawn of her home?...

No, but you do have to kiss off your President, over a stupid Hillary Clinton, “queen of late term abortion”, kind of an issue.

Leave the damned elephants alone, and offer up some financial aide to replace the money that would have been raised by collecting trophies.

No. The way you save animals is to make them valuable to the local populace.

Trump does not want to kill lions.

Africa is poor and corrupt. They charge roughly $50k for a license to harvest a elephant or a lion. It's done to keep the population balanced. Elephants in particular rapidly destroy trees and kill them. There is only a harvest if the numbers support it. The funds go into supporting wildlife by drilling water wells, buying land, prosecuting poachers.

“Leave the damned elephants alone, and offer up some financial aide to replace the money that would have been raised by collecting trophies.”

Then what they will do is take that Financial aid and top it off by allowing Hunters.

Are you serious ? The funds go where they should in one of the most corrupt, nonfunctioning countries in the world ?

To quote from the original HSUS article:

A number of problems with Zimbabwe’s elephant management remain unresolved to date: the lack of an elephant management plan; lack of sufficient data on population numbers and trends; anemic enforcement of wildlife laws; lack of information about how money derived from trophy hunting by U.S. hunters is distributed within Zimbabwe; and lack of a national mechanism, such as government support, to sustain elephant conservation efforts in the country.

I don’t think it will turn out that way...

Nor should the US worker be forced to pay for every problem in the world.

We can’t afford police the world, nor pay for the world.

“The parks the protect the Elephants would not exist without hunting money.”

The nub of the matter. No hunting money—no parks & no conservation. Since the elephants are in a Africa, a 3rd world penniless sh!thole, they end up being killed by lions, villagers and poachers.

A hunter kills one or two...the latter group kills thousands.

I think you'd be surprised. The governments know wildlife is one of their few cash industries. Regardless Zimbabwe is a hell hole and there are many other countries.

“The Trump administration says we have to kill elephants to help save them. The data says otherwise.”

As if the lying WashPoo were suddenly interested in data and facts!
To save the elephant, just let people EAT it. There will never be any risk of extinction of hogs, chickens, cows, turkeys... that’s what data say.
