Back before traffic got heavier and the CHP started using radar on CA interstates you could set the cruise control in the 100-110 range and drive for hours. I did Richmond CA to Edwards AFB in 4:53 and it was about 475 miles. Also made Redding from the same origination in 2:10.
Those were in a Saturn SL2.
In most jurisdictions in Canada you will get charged with “stunting” for just 50 kmh (30 mph) over the limit. The potential consequences are:
- An immediate roadside suspension for 7 days.
- A court is able to impose a license suspension of up to 2 years on the first offence and a suspension of up to 10 years for any subsequent convictions.
- Fines of $ 2000 minimum and a maximum of $10,000.
- Imprisonment, up to a maximum of 6 months.
In 1997 and again in 1998 I drove across the country on I-80. That stretch west of Salt Lake City through the salt flats? I only wished I had a vehicle that would go fast. I could only go 85 MPH in the loaded, 4- cylinder pick up I was driving. I got passed several times by blurry steel machines that actually pushed enough wind to rock my truck. I don’t even remember if there was a posted speed limit back then. I only knew I was driving as fast as my truck would go.
