CNN Corrects Botched WikiLeaks Report: Initial Reporting ‘Was Incorrect’

Hours after publishing a bombshell report claiming members of the Trump campaign and Trump Organization — including then-candidate Donald Trump and Donald Trump Jr. — had received an email from WikiLeaks providing a decryption key and website address to hacked content, CNN has issued a correction noting that it got the date of the email incorrect.

Below is the correction from the CNN report:

Correction: This story has been corrected to say the date of the email was September 14, 2016, not September 4, 2016. The story also changed the headline and removed a tweet from Donald Trump Jr., who posted a message about WikiLeaks on September 4, 2016.

CNN Communications also tweeted out an explanation:

CNN's initial reporting of the date on an email sent to members of the Trump campaign about Wikileaks documents, which was confirmed by two sources to CNN, was incorrect. We have updated our story to include the correct date, and present the proper context for the timing of email

However, subsequent reports from the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal refuted CNN’s report, stating that the email had actually been sent 10 days later. With it becoming apparent that CNN had a major screwup on its hand, Media Twitter began railing against the network for its erroneous story.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~It took 2 full hours for them to know they were lying, nobody told them because nobody watches their FAKE NEWS!!!

UPDATE 4:25 PM ET: CNN’s Brian Stelter, quoting a CNN spokesperson, noted that Raju will not face any disciplinary action over the botched report because the error came from his sources.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Does this make any sense?

Suppose it was a true story?

Why would that be a “bombshell report”? Whoever got those Hillary emails into the public eye did the nation an incredible service, it certainly was not criminal if it were done by the Trump campaign - telling the truth about HRC was their job.

And the Wikileaks emails have never been alleged to be false. True information about an opposing candidate can never be a crime.

Releasing a statement is not a correction and the “initial reporting” was incorrect as well as the wall to wall coverage that came afterward and the other news organizations who then reported this false news that CNN started.
