Newly released body camera footage shows a police officer shooting an unarmed man in an Arizona hotel after the man sobbed and pleaded with officers not to shoot him.

The graphic video, which was released after a jury on Thursday acquitted the officer of murder and manslaughter charges, stoked outrage on social media and renewed calls for reforms in law enforcement.

What did this guy do that got the police involved in the first place?

I don’t understand why the command of “crawl towards me” was given.

Lie down. Interlace. Cuff. Move on to (empty) room from where NO shots were fired from his fake gun. This cop should be put in GenPop so he can know the terror this poor kid experienced.

“... at a level 10 intensity...”

Agreed. This is why in training... the orders are semi-memorized in order to keep it simple and clear (thus safe). That being said, not all rookie schools/training are equal. Some are better and more professional. If this was this officer’s training.. it got someone killed who wasn’t armed (a pellet gun in his room).

Keep arms reaching and lie flat? That would be like saying “If you fall you’d better fall on your face!”. Contradictory.

Do we “allow the police extra rights” or do we give them greater latitude because we are asking them to put themselves at great risk in order to protect us? I would say that it is the later...and I would also say, in this case, the officer failed to meet any reasonable threshold of necessary use of deadly force.

I have family members who are law enforcement and they feel the same way. Incidents such as these tarnish the reputation of all of the good officers who go to work every day to serve and protect.

This guy was either horribly trained (Shouting all the confusing and contradictory commands), too panic-stricken to think/act clearly ( a trait which should have been caught earlier on in his career) or, worst of all, he truly thought he was bad-ass and wanted to shoot someone, which should have been caught in a psych eval and he should never have been hired! Whichever was the case, this was NOT a justified shooting!

“The background is simple. Shaver was a traveling pest control worker. He was in his hotel room (a La Quinta Inn) showing off to guests a pellet gun he used for work. Police responded to a 911 call claiming that a man was pointing a rifle out a window.”

The idea of a possibly armed situation is to immobilize the suspect, get him cuffed and then searched ASAP.. The only exception I can think of is a felony stop involving a vehicle and other suspects. You do then want the suspect to walk backwards (away from the vehicle) towards you until they can be cuffed. The officer had all day to enact this stop. The hallway was clear. No other suspects known at the time. He had all day to order the suspect to do what he wanted. In my opinion.. a bad shoot.

I would say it is the former. I do not send police out in dangerous situations to protect me. The GOVERNMENT sends police out to raise revenue, primarily, and incidentally to enforce compliance at the point of a gun. They do not protect.

Arizona is an open carry state...every situation is a ‘possibly armed’ one.

Mentally follow this: keep your arms reaching the sky. Don’t drop your arms. Now, kneel down while keeping your arms reaching the sky. Now, drop on your belly while keeping your arms extended towards the sky. Now, don’t move a muscle and we will handcuff you.

It is clearer and more simple. It is way better than “don’t drop your hands or I’ll shoot you” and “crawl towards me (thus dropping your arms” so bang, bang.

arms reaching means arms extended way above your head.

Police Dept coverup. Hopefully the family of this man shot to death in cold blood will file a civil suit against the Police Dept and this unhinged and ill-trained cop.

There was a time when cops thought it honorable to have carried a badge for 30 years and never had to pull their gun.

Now cops think it dishonorable to have served any time at all without having killed someone. And killing someone does not cost them one minute of sleep.

Refusing to bring in cops with too high an IQ and admitting cops on an affirmative action basis who are not qualified are equally to blame.

That is utterly terrifying. That cop is a sadist and will strike again even if no longer a cop.

Cops don’t tell people to crawl. This cop is showing his dominance and sadist tendencies. He has no business on any police force. I cannot understand the jury’s verdict.

“..every situation is a possibly armed one”.

Rookie school 101: EVERY situation is an armed one if a police officer is present. He or she has a weapon and the situation now involves at least one handgun. Although this is a good way to teach handgun retention.. it is also a good way to make the officer aware of any other possibility. Open carry or a state like mine (where dang near no one has a weapon in a vehicle/store etc except the cops (and bad guys)...

I want to know how you lay flat on the ground while keeping your hands above your head unless you fall flat on your face. You would instinctively reach out to touch the floor to allow yourself to lay flat. And you would get shot for not keeping your hands above your head.
