The term thug dates back to the society of murders in thirteenth through nineteenth century india, who largely killed by strangulation.

During the twentieth century the term came to refer to criminals who inflict violence or threaten violence through brute muscle rather than weapons. In the ccorporate versus union struggles of the early twentieth century before unions became tools of communism both the brutes in the union and the hired muscle brought in by the industrial monopolisticwere rreferred to as thugs.
In the heyday of the Italian mafia, big men who assaulted welching gamblers were referred to as thugs.
Not a dimes worth of racial diversity in any of those groups.
