White House bars employees from using personal cellphones in West Wing

The White House announced Thursday that it is banning employees and guests from using personal cellphones in the West Wing, citing security and technology concerns.

"The security and integrity of the technology systems at the White House is a top priority for the Trump administration and therefore starting next week the use of all personal devices for both guests and staff will no longer be allowed in the West Wing,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.

“Staff will be able to conduct business on their government-issued devices and continue working hard on behalf of the American people," she added.

The move comes amid growing concerns about leaks from the White House, though this was not cited as a reason for the new ban.

Although the ban will include official visitors, it is not expected to apply to members of the press.

The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman first reported on the ban Wednesday night, tweeting that staffers were told “early in the term” but only now is it being enforced.

Bloomberg News reported that the ban was imposed by Chief of Staff John Kelly, who has taken steps to impose order and discipline at the White House since he took the role in July.

Personal cellphones make leaking to the press oh so much easier and harder to detect in a leak investigation.

I just heard on the radio that the White House said this was for security purposes, but in reality it was to keep people from leaking news out of the White House.

LOL! It made me laugh.

Not to mention the newly announced meltdown and specter security flaws that affect devices, computers, phones, tablets... anything with chips.

Sounds like Kelly has given those involved enough rope. When one is acting on inside into and it is cut off one must guess or react - both put one at risk. If your sources see compromised but controlled they will have to take bigger risks to stay viable i.e. Ahead of the game or keep the payoffs coming. Now the real squirming begins.

They will be known as Saturday and Sunday

I work in a prison. The only people that have cellphones are the Warden, His Deputy and the Inspector. Every other phone must be turned off and secured in our vehicles. No exceptions, ever. I Haven’t missed a damn thing going on in my life in 24 years. I did have to eventually tell the wife to stop calling for stupid S**t (there’s a reason why she’s the ex-wife).

Hubby worked for years in a SCIF. No cell phones, not even the ones issued by the company allowed inside. Never missed his. I’m not one of those “calling or texting every 15 minutes” type wives, so it never bothered me.

Very smart idea, should have been implemented the first day.

I worked in a building where sensitive records were kept and we had to have our cellphones turned off and could only use them if we were out of the building on a break. I came in from a break, thought I’d turned my cell off and locked it in a cabinet behind me. The moment my supervisor walked by my cube the cabinet “rang”. Yikes! Was lucky I didn’t lose my job but only got a written warning. Funny thing, though, was my ringtone was Big and Rich “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy”. :)

"Phones should be turned in, put in a Farraday cage, and retrieved only when leaving."

That's how I (and everyone I dealt with) had to operate for years before I retired. Deal with it!

My wife got me a cell phone years ago to us during work.
I spent about 80% of my time in the field and she thought it would make life easier for me.
WRONG; it just made me more accessible to all the idiots who refused to think for themselves.
I still have a cell phone around here somewhere, covered in about a quarter inch of dust.
I never have understood the idea that you have to be continuously connected to the entire universe 24/7.

That reminds me of way back when Bill Clinton came into the White House. According to FBI agent Gary Aldrich's book Unlimited Access, the Clinton White House staff ripped out the new phone system and replaced it with a system that didn't log calls. They hated that.

As a bonus everybody had two lines - one public line for people to leave voicemails on that was never answered. Another private one so they could communicate among themselves.

This was frustrating for Aldrich who was trying to get clearances for everyone - they didn't answer his voicemails.

I worked from 1957 forward to today without having a cell phone in the work place.

Back then they foresaw you would have one of these.

“I worked from 1957 forward to today without having a cell phone in the work place.”

We were never allowed to call my Mom at work.

I love that song!

On a related note, maybe this “no cell phone in the WH” rule will finally stifle that smarmy anti-Trump WH staffer on Twitter. Not sure he’s even a staffer, but he needs to disappear.
