Let's go simplistic: there are two kinds of reporters in the world, those with an interest in the scam and those who wish along with their loved ones to not become "accident-prone".
A seemingly unrelated anonymous homicide several states distant can be quite intimidating to one with a family who was given very specific prior notice. And, such action is much more effective than any which might draw attention to a potential reporter.
There is every reason for ordinary concerned citizens who listen to what the news media is, and is not telling us, to conclude we are facing an enormous national struggle between powerful opposing forces.
Indeed, no matter from which level the issue is viewed, whether it is Main Street U.S.A or the corridors of the WH, as Mariner states it, "We are IN IT."
