California Rep. Darrell Issa will announce his retirement from Congress on Wednesday, according to sources who confirmed the news to the Washington Examiner.

The OC Daily first reported the California Republican would announce his retirement from his seat later on Wednesday after serving in Congress since 2001. Issa later confirmed the news in a statement.

"Throughout my service, I worked hard and never lost sight of the people our government is supposed to serve. Yet with the support of my family, I have decided that I will not seek re-election in California's 49th District," Issa said.

Understood, and I have always been opposed to open primaries and primaries where the opposition party cant even participate. That is what Cali has become, actually been for a very long time now.

Regarding Issa, I still cant judge his reasoning for retiring but seems to me that after 16 years, he has a right to quit. I hope we don’t lose the house, but people make their own life decisions. It is what it is.

Who wants to be the leadership of the Minority?

The republican party is a dead man walking.

It would not surprise me to see us revert to a three party system: Left, moderate, conservative.

And the Moderates will determine who runs the world.

People on this board have been warning that these House seats are in serious danger, and not just the ones who voted for the tax bill. Issa sees what’s coming, and decided it’s best to leave on his own terms. Ryan will only care if he loses the House.

Dems are energized and with some of GOP base still having a tantrum about the tax bill I can see why Issa wouldn’t want to run. He barely won in 2016 and 2018 was always going to be harder with Trump in the White House.

San Diego County was a bastion of conservatism 25 years ago. Soon we will be down to one Republican congressman. There were 3 Republican congressmen from San Diego County not too long ago.

“Issa is almost certainly retiring in part due to this issue.”

Tom McClintock and Dana Rohrabacher are next.

Both represent districts that are marginally Republican and their constituencies take the SALT deduction over 50%.

Queue funeral music.

Issa’s district is now part Orange County (San Clemente), and part San Diego County (Oceanside). In 2016 Issa only beat the Democrat by 7/10ths of a point. Issa’s opponent, Doug Applegate is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is in the district.

With the new tax law, they will get murdered at the polls. Losing SALT deductions is not playing very well in high tax states.

Look, we’re already at the point in time where it’s impossible to hire a bunch of good lookin’ women for the occasional ass-pat or cleavage-stare without risk. Trump has ruined the old “get along to get along” system and seems to think Congresscritters should be held accountable, there’s no telling when you’ll become the laughingstock of the nation in one of his tweets. And it’s becoming damn difficult to enrich yourself to become a multi-millionaire by serving in Congress.

So no wonder the swamp animals are leaving in droves.

Yep.

And no one seems to worry about it. Yet.

And yet there are currently 14 Republican members of the House of Representatives from California and the Republicans have a 19 seat majority in the House.
Some folks forget that the northern third of the state is dominated by conservatives who would love to break away from the liberal southern two-thirds.

Tell that to Devin Nunes.

Nice to hear from another California expert who

He’s my congress critter. The primary reason he is not seeking reelection is the fact he has little to no chance to win.

Demographics in this district is precisely why.

SALT deduction BS.

Issa cannot win his seat this time around due to Demographics and he knows it.

Look at how close the race was for him last time. He almost lost.

I live here. Issa is my rep. I have seen the influx of new residents in this area and most are likely to vote for a dem.

Anyone who was going to vote for Issa isn't going to suddenly switch to voting for a dem due to the SALT unless they are not sane.

You and the others crying over the SALT deduction loss are focused on your own pet peeve. Demographics is why Issa isn't going to run again. Look at the results from his last win. Very close. With the demographics changing in our district, and I have seen the change up close over the last several years, means he has little to no chance to win this time around.

House flipping? FlipWilson says it’s too early to predict any flip or flop. If the tax cut emergizes the economy, then the democrats are dead meat. Running on “vote for us and we will end the status quo of a booming economy by impeaching Trump” isn’t going to go over very well.

He’s probably tired of holding hearings that result in nothing ever happening.
