This is mostly correct with the exceptions of locality, state/local law, and LEO policy.
Plenty of accounts our there involving civilian defensive shootings where the defender was not arrested, nor charged. Detroit? Michigan has made some changes, but the motor city is still....hinky?

No shooting people on your own property in self defense is almost always legal and hardly anybody ever goes to jail for it.
If you live in one of the few democratic socialist states of America like Illinois, New York or CA you may have a problem. Unfortunately this poor slob lives in Illinois and worse Detroit.
In GA we have stand your ground and castle doctrine. In metro Atlanta we have daily if not hourly shootings of home intruders. The only people who ever go to jail are the intruders if they live.
And likely bankrupted by liars...I mean, lawyers.
