Through a dogged campaign to build toilets and educate Bangladeshis about the dangers of open defecation, the densely populated South Asian nation has managed to reduce the number of people who defecate in the open to just 1 percent of the 166 million population, according to the government down from 42 percent in 2003.

They are going to stop being a shithole country?
Or is shithole a step up?
one percent of 100 million is still a million crapping in the streets... probably twice a day...
mmmm progress.
Where are all these Bangladeshites defecting to?
What?
Its about what?
Great Flaming Wolf Spiders!!!
Maybe they should defect.
But are cows still sh!tting in the streets?
That's what I do at home. We have a fancy name for it. We call it a "septic tank". It's fairly common in rural America.
Not sure about this but I think Bengladesh is Muslim, so they have no particular attachment to cows.
PSA:
Keep our streets poo free.
Please,don’t poo in the streets.
San Francisco should send a delegation to see how they did it.
PSA:
Give a hoot.
Not a poop.
So... in 2027 Los Angeles will figure this hygiene stuff out?
We provided schoolchildren with whistles to alert the villagers. It worked like magic,
I imagine some old guy going off in the woods to take a nice quiet dump, and some three year old coming up behind him and blowing the whistle as loud as possible in his ear.
Not. Ending. Well.
A latrine/pit privy is absolutely not the same thing as a septic system.
Did you dig this historical gem out of the AP manure pile by yourself, or is it getting airplay at other websites, too?
The article described how people would go to the railroad tracks and defecate between them.
Dis-gu-sting!
Are 1,660,000 peolple defecating openly enough to turn a small country into a s***hole?
Well, whatever it is, I aint going there.
Pfffwaaap
Well, it won't stop being a shithole country. Same article:
People might be using a toilet or a latrine, but then where does the human waste go from there?
They crap in a pan, and presumably dump it outside where they used to squat and defecate. Problem still exists, slight improvement.
OK, still:
1) A septic system is still basically a craphole in your back yard. Mine is on the opposite side of the house, and about 60 yards away, from the well head.
2) A pit toilet is not as good as a septic tank, but it’s a lot better than turds in the street.
3) If Bangladesh is, in fact, no longer a $#!+hole country then we don’t need to be taking in refugees from it. Send them back.
Well...one carefully placed step at a time.
That’s WONDERFUL! Now, they have to teach them how to use toilet paper, or in some cases in the woods.....sticks!
