Bangladesh stops open defecation in just over a decade
Associated Press ^ | July 16, 2016

Through a dogged campaign to build toilets and educate Bangladeshis about the dangers of open defecation, the densely populated South Asian nation has managed to reduce the number of people who defecate in the open to just 1 percent of the 166 million population, according to the government — down from 42 percent in 2003.

Well...one carefully placed step at a time.

Gross. That's why I carry a flashlight when walking dark sidewalks at night. Don't want to step in dog poo. Now imagine walking around avoiding stepping in people poo. Yikes! I've had to clean my toddler granddaughters shoes when she ignorantly walks over dog poo on grass. Can't imagine having to clean shoes on a daily basis in a shithole country. Or maybe they just don't bother.

Only a million and a half people a day defecating on the street. That’s still a little worse than San Fran Cisco.

1) Assuming your septic system is legal, it also includes a distribution box and a drainfiled (aka leach field) consisting of several lengths of perforated pipe buried at uniform depths in permeable soil. No matter what you may think, a properly constructed septic system is not “basically a crap hole hole in your backyard”. A septic system is, in fact, a small sewage treatment facility, albeit a very basic one. It includes primary settling and filtration of liquid overflow from the settling tank. It also includes rudimentary anaerobic digestion of settled solids. These processes constitute a safe and sanitary method of sewage treatment and disposal.

2) That was the point of my original post.

3) The number of refugees from Bangladesh living in this country is minuscule compared to those from other countries. In fact, Bangladesh itself has a significant problem with refugees entering their country from neighboring Myanmar (née Burma).

I was thinking along the same lines. And if you consider how many people would be living in the average 1,500 square foot structure in a third world nation, your typical residential system from the USA would be unable to keep up.

First they came for the feces (now reduced to just 1.6 million people pooping in the streets)....Next they will come for the urine...

Next thing you know Bangladesh will be the shining example for SF & LA & NYC to follow...

“Maybe San Francisco should study how Bangladesh accomplished this.”

Better throw San Diego in there too.

That’s true. Standard septic systems are very space-inefficient. They are not a good option for densely populated areas.

Big whoopee. Even a cat can be trained to $hit in a box. 1% is still a lot of people pooping on the streets. Trump is right. I’ll bet Norway is cleaner.

Or maybe they just don't bother.

They don't have to clean it off their shoes, they don't wear shoes.

Hmmm, earth shoes (nice brown sandals - "uh, not wearing any").
