Paul Ryan: Republicans Need To 'Pay Attention' To Democrats' Big Special Election Win

WASHINGTON ― Wisconsin Democrats scored a major upset victory Tuesday when they won a state Senate race in a district that Donald Trump easily carried in the 2016 presidential election.

Top Wisconsin Republicans ― including House Speaker Paul Ryan ― acknowledged it was a blow to their party, and it could mean bad news for the GOP in the 2018 midterm elections.

“I know this district fairly well. It’s not my district. It’s over in western Wisconsin. But typically, we’ve held this seat. And we lost this seat last night,” Ryan told reporters in Washington on Wednesday. “So yeah, I think we should pay attention to it.”

Good points. I agree with your take on it.

I wasn’t aware of the two out of three factor you mentioned.

Interesting...

That comment nails it. If Republicans would fight like Hell, they wouldn’t lose.

Ryan is a clueless moron.

33% of the dems turned out to vote in that Wisconsin special election yesterday.

Only 12% of Republicans could be bothered to get off their ass and go to the polls.

Same deal in Alabama....650,000 Trump voters couldn’t be bothered to go vote for Roy Moore, so a dem won.

Why is Ronna McDaniel not out drumming up turnout everywhere?

Why do only 1% of GOP voters even know who she is? or can name RNC chairman?

In California voters have turned in enough petitions to vote on the recall of Josh Newman.

The Democrats changed the recall rules, got the courts involved to delay the recall election for a year.

If he is recalled then the Democrats would lose their super-majority.

This is in California. It seems to me if they were so confident they wouldn’t be trying to delay the election.

Great points. The GOP wants to lose because it will hurt the President.

Paul Ryan needs to pay attention to what has been going on for the last 15 years.
Stop telling people what to do and start listening to your Base.

Anyone know anything about either the Dem or Rep in this race? Was it a Paul Ryan RINO that was defeated? Is it possible the Dem supports an America first agenda? If the Reps want to continue to be RINOs and fight the President, they should lose.

I just don’t think the GOPe has the organization to get the vote out, they are totally lazy, they don’t want to spend the money or the effort for local grassroots organizations to walk the street, knock on doors, hit the telephones, go through lists... they sure didn’t do it when Romney ran. There were so many complaints during that election of Republican locals doing NOTHING. NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING.

You have to hire people to do that. You have to be organized to do that. They make me sick. I have friends who are in their late sixties who always contributed to the Republicans but they never got a call, ‘need any help getting to the polls? Need a ride?’ Oh hell no. Who is going to give the local organization an ass-kicking when people like Ryan float about showing their pretty blue eyes to the press cameras and doing NOTHING for anybody else? I swear it’s like they belong to an exclusive upper-class boarding school, living on Daddy’s money. Knock on doors? Ooohhh that would be so working-class!

This race was not lost because of GOP infighting. It was lost in one county - St Croix County.

It’s a populous county right on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. It’s like an exurb for people who work in St Paul. It leans GOP but is not arch-conservative.

It’s hard to say what happened but per the link below, the GOP candidate got beat up in St Croix County:

https://www.sccwi.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1962

Did Trump’s unpopularity play a part in the loss? Maybe. St Croix County gets their news from the Twin Cities - hardly a bastion of right-wing thinking.

Did the GOP candidate ignore St Croix County? Maybe he took it for granted that the votes were his.

Regardless of who’s fault it is, this doesn’t bode well for the GOP later this year. This election reminds me a lot of a US House special election in Kentucky in the spring of ‘94. The GOP snatched away a seat that had been solidly Dem since Reconstruction.

An argument could be made that it was a harbinger of the GOP tidal wave that year. I hope that’s not the case here.

Exactly, but then I don’t think McConnell or Ryan would object.

Of course they wouldn’t be in the majority then, but it would suit their desires perfectly.

If they blow this like I think they’ll try to do, the party will be totally dead to me.

The only reason I hung in there was to get a Reagan/Trump type in there again.

If they thwart any progress, I’ll drop out. To hell with it.

Sad but true. The mask has been lifted. They are not clueless they are conniving bastards.

And why?

Getting illegals into this country is so important to ALL of the establishment. Why?

Who is getting paid!

Only 12% R turnout, 33% D.

Thanks! That's the reason right there. Then you have to back up and analyze WHY they didn't turn out. I don't know the district so I have no idea.

But I do think a unified Republican Party would have made a difference. The Republicans have been fighting with Trump needlessly. Personally I think their main beef is style more than substance. They don't like the way Trump speaks and tweets so they fight him. It's very petty. Sometimes Trump can be petty as well as he is not perfect either.

Until all of them learn how to fight as a cohesive team there will be problems. The tax cut was a good accomplishment. If they can get more of that then I think these races will take care of themselves.

Alabama voters were told by their GOP Senator to write some one else in.
Bush League Republicans would rather a Democrat win than anyone who would side with US.
