Democrats Using Same Strategy Republicans Tried in 2013
The Spectator ^ | 21 January 2018 | Debra Saunders

In 2013, House Republicans shut down the federal government in a doomed effort to defund then President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. It lasted 17 days and accomplished nothing.

Amazingly, Democrats have decided to follow the same lame playbook.

Back in 2013, Obama called it the “Republican shutdown” — and he was right, even if his party controlled the White House and Senate. Top aide Dan Pfeiffer likened the shutdown caucus to terrorists with a “bomb strapped to their chest.”

Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., had a similar view. The solidly conservative congressman called those pushing the shutdown “lemmings with suicide vests.”. . . snip

Ten Senate Democrats up for re-election this year hail from states Trump won in 2016. As the shutdown drags on, Republicans are more than happy to hammer them for their membership in a party that put undocumented immigrants before CHIP kids, as well as the underfunded military. Meanwhile, a rump of Democrats and Republicans have said they don’t want to pass another continuing resolution because temporary fixes shortchange defense.

Will the Dumbocrats lose the public relations war over DACA and the shutdown 2018? This author seems to think so.

Your thoughts?

1. Republicans were in the majority in 2013.

2. Fair or not, Republicans will always be blamed.

>> the same lame playbook.

Let's see...

  1) Republicans Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Jeff Sessions filibustered in protest of extreme Socialism via Obamacare...

  2) Democrats Chuck Schumer et al lazily demanded acceptance of massive illegal immigration.

That's the same playbook? Sorry, Debra -- the two events are hardly identical in both principle and effort.

The same democrats who voted no to tax reform voted against children health care(CHIP) and put 800,000 illegals ahead of 330,000,000 Americans. That’s called a losing exacta.

Big Difference between 2013 and 2018....

In 2013, honorable Republicans were trying to end an un-Constitutional program that was failing to deliver on its many promises that were KNOWN to be lies....you could not keep your health insurance or doctor (if you liked them), it would not save the average family $2,500/year - and it would not save any money in the Federal Budget.

In 2018 - the Democrats want to RETAIN an un-Constitutional program that was issued by Executive Edit, and they don’t care that the DACA and DAPA program (the DAPA program has already been ruled un-Constitutional by the 5th Circuit Court) will hurt our federal budget (as well as many state budgets).

Both times - the conservatives are on the correct side of the Constitution, and both times, the Democrats are anti-Constitution and anti-Americans.

Democrats have convinced their base that they can’t vote no on DACA... That would be racist. They also convinced their base that Trumps wall is racist and so is anyone who votes for it.

So what does Trump do? He sets a trap and offers DACA in exchange for the wall. The only way to avoid the trap is to use the only leverage they have left... the budget.

It’s the only play left for Schumer. Democrats have to take their medicine and better to take it now than wait closer to the election. Besides, the media might bail them out and they come out of this with DACA... and trap averted.

I have to say... pretty sly move for a guy so new at politics.

I have to agree, overall I think Mr. Trump has “learned the game of DC politics” quite well in his year of on-the-job-training.

Tossing DACA back to Congress, who abdicated responsibility in the first instance and did not challenge Obama’s usurpation of law in the second. So, the “hot potato” is back where it belongs and the results are predictable.

My dream is that as a result of this, provided the public sediment is on the side of Mr. Trump after the shutdown is over, would be that the Senate get ride of the “fake filibuster” rule and allow a simple majority to pass laws and approve appointees.

A “crap shoot” should the Dumbocrats regain control of the Senate in November, but, I doubt they would hesitate for a “New York Minute” to reject the rule if they regain power. Just my 2¢.

What I think is idiot GOPe wasted valuable political assets doing this shut down in 13 against Ocare only to shut down in 17 to oppose Trump getting rid of Ocare.

We would not be here asking if democrats are going to lose the momentum if the GOPe was not so apt at wasting any kind of momentum they could gain out of this.

Oh very yes they will lose. They are playing a very weak hand. As evidenced by Dan Borgino's takedown of the liberal propagandist on Judge Jeanine tonight. That said it all in a nutshell. The dude was desparate to blame the shutdown on the Donald but got faceplanted into a stuttering, mumbling mess. I thought he was gonna cry.

The Clinton method is no longer working for them. These cats are DONE.

This temporary funding nonsense needs to come to a halt. Who in the hell do they think they’re working for? It sure isn’t us.

We need a balanced budget amendment and we need it now!

It accomplished nothing? Didn't the GOP win control of the Senate in 2014 by campaigning on the very issue that drove them to shut down the government in 2013?

I think they have already lost it - House Repubs had a poster with Schumer saying it would be idiocy to shut the government down over immigration - during the 2013 deal - which is freshly ironic today...

That shutdown in 2013 was our last chance to shut down Obamacare relatively painlessly. After that, it destroyed too much of the infrastructure, and created too much of an ill-gotten constituency to roll back in a manner anything like cleanly.

Not quite the same. In 2013 the GOP was objecting to the CR because it contained funding for Obamacare which they opposed. The Dems don’t object to anything in this CR. Tthey oppose it simply because they are trying to force the GOP to accept unconditional amnesty for illegal immigrants and the government shutdown is leverage for that purpose.
