'Put Trump in his place': nationalism awakens in Mexican presidential race

Donald Trump's habit of slapping down Mexico is feeding nationalist sentiment in the country's presidential election campaign, prompting contenders to defy him and strengthening the hand of the frontrunner, who is courting the anti-establishment vote.

In the past week, the three top contenders for the July election have all said Mexico will not pay for the wall the U.S. president wants to build on the U.S. southern border. None has made the point more forcefully than Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a veteran leftist leading the opinion polls.

A victory for Lopez Obrador, who was runner-up in 2006 and 2012, could usher in a more distant and confrontational relationship between the two nations as he promises to lessen Mexico's economic dependence on foreign powers.

That dependence is strongest with the United States: Mexico sends about 80 percent of its exports to its northern neighbor and the United States has traditionally been the source of the bulk of foreign direct investment. Under Trump, however, Mexican views of the United States have soured.

"Without being disrespectful, we're going to put him in his place," Lopez Obrador said of Trump on Thursday in the Gulf of Mexico port of Veracruz, the scene of a notorious national humiliation when U.S. forces occupied it in 1914.

Oh, they are putting him in his place? I'm glad to know they are going to make Mexico a nice place to own a home, have a well-paying job and have a non-corrupt police force to fight drug cartels and ordinary crime! A New Mexico for my lifetime- cough, cough.

Let's face it: non-westernized societies have no self-respect.

Good. Maybe they will start working harder to make their failed nation a place where Mexicans actually want to live.

Maybe we should declare war on Mexico. Would it then be easier to throw out all the illegals?

Yes, please, become more nationalistic and less dependent on the USA. Show the world Mexico is moving away from being a sh!thole. Make Mexico Great Again for a change.

I support Mexican nationalism, as long as it doesn’t seek to infringe on our own.

It would be nice to see MMG as opposed to MMGA (MAGA). It has never been great.

It’s people have been far too patient. It’s time for the government to think of the people, and take down the cartels with prejudice.

Mexico has never been a friend of this country. It outsources it's poverty to this country, and offloads their troublesome mestizo (indian) population on this country (calling us racist when we object), and enjoys billions in remittances from their colonists in this country.Screw Mexico.

Too late . Trump IS in his place. Wait until he starts putting wetbacks that the border patrol arrests to work building the wall.

How come no one talks about how Mexico treats the darker-skinned Mestizos? They are the ones sneaking over the border. Meanwhile, the ruling class white Spanish Mexicans hold sway.

Obrador, a true Latin American socialist/communist has a fair chance to win this time since there are two other contenders splitting the vote.

If he wins and starts flinging feces, I hope Pres. Trump repatriates his fellow countrymen at an even faster pace.

Mexico hasn’t had a real civil war in about a century.

Donald Trump's habit of slapping down Mexico...

Is there any proof or documentation of this? How is wanting to enforce our immigration laws "slapping down Mexico"? How is protecting our sovereign border "slapping down Mexico"? He once said Mexico doesn't send us their best and brightest, but sends us criminals and rapists. The hard data show that there is a LOT of truth to that statement. ¿Por qué son sus bragas en una torsión?

Well, that does it. I’m going to start boycotting Mexican goods. That is, when I find any, other than the Mexican Coca-Cola I buy (real cane sugar). No more Mexican Coca-Cola until they pay for the Wall! Can’t think of anything else good coming from Mexico. Anything else made by Mexico can be found here in the USA, because half their population is already here.
