Really? When I went to grade school back in the fifties we were taught that the term gender applied only to pronouns and there were three genders, he, him, his were masculine gender pronouns, she, her, hers were feminine gender pronouns and they, them, theirs were neuter gender pronouns. Of course we didn’t study foreign languages so we would not have known of any meaning involving Latin nouns.
