The White House is confirming one fatality and one serious injury after a chartered train carrying Republican lawmakers to a retreat in West Virginia hit a garbage truck.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders says there are no serious injuries among members of Congress or congressional staff.
Sanders says President Donald Trump has been fully briefed on the matter and is receiving regular updates.
The train carrying the lawmakers hit a garbage truck south of Charlottesville, Virginia.
Lawmakers are heading to their annual legislative retreat at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The crash occurred in Crozet, Virginia. The train had not yet entered West Virginia.
Update. Congressman Michael Burgess live on fox news has concerns that this may be a deliberate attack. Says there’s fuel and some kind of “antifreeze” type of substance leaking from the truck.
So that's a feature and it wouldn't have to be a black bag installation?
[[Wow you all must not have a lot of trash!
Im telling you even in my county there is always three to a truck. One to drive and two to pick up. The two can ride in the back hanging on or in the cab till they get to the neighborhoods to pick up trash. Get what Im saying?]]
It’s not unusual to only have a driver in lots of places.
Where I live we have special bins for garbage and recycling .
The truck has an arm that picks up the bin and dumps it.
The only person in the truck is the driver.
The only time I see more than one person in the truck is when they have yard debris or bulk (furniture etc) pick ups and then there is only one extra person in the truck and the driver has to get out to help. I used to see three but not anymore since they changed things . Some places are more automated than others.
You know how an On-Star car can be slowed, then killed completely when the payment’s late? You get better insurance rates if you can kill your fleet remotely to avoid theft or unauthed use.
Yup, that makes sense.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., tweeted that “there were three
people inside the truck that was straddling the track and
which the train hit.” He confirmed that one person died and
wrote that one person had minor injuries and another had
serious injuries.
I’m sure MSNBC is happy. 100 Republican children could get blown up and they’d not bat an eye.
My area used to have a driver and person who dumped the cans in the back. I more urban areas I could see having a 2nd person dump trash cans from both sides of their narrow street in one stop. Now many suburban/rural routes use the hydraulic arm to grab the can and just a driver.
Thanks. Wowser!
I’m watching an old movie on TCM. You’re right, it will drive one nuts. And the same goes for being on FR or other sites too much.
It looks like the debris (truck and garbage) from the collision lies just before the railroad crossing. It would appear then that the collision occurred further down the tracks from where the train is stopped. So my question is: Was the truck on the tracks at a previous crossing or some other location?
Near Ivy?
Paul Ryan aboard!
This doesn’t seem suspicious at all. /s
[[Why was the truck sitting on the track? Was it stuck at a traffic light? Is there a hill so you cant see it coming? Were the lights on the crossing not working? and why didnt they jump out of the truck...or at least one or two of them... a bit strange. Maybe on their phones? texting?]]
Or maybe the people in the truck are completely innocent of the accident and it was disabled on the track on purpose remotely . I think all if not almost all commercial vehicles have computers in them that can stop them remotely with out the driver being able to do anything about it.
It was heading to West Virginia, thought it was already there. My bad.
Geez, this is all poor Senator Paul needs after being viciously attacked in his yard to be in a train wreck.
