I think it’s more complicated than just falling for fake news.

It’s understandable that recent history would cause some people to think that nothing will ever change, that everyone in politics and government is dirty, and that our systems will never be as relatively honest and straightforward as we think they were in past times. And it may give some a sense of self-validation to express that negativity.

They forget that everything begins in thought, and that what you expect from profound conviction is usually what you get. It’s very easy to be a pessimist; and much more difficult to be optimistic - even though optimism is the smarter way to go.

You’ve got nothing to lose, by being optimistic, while pessimism just makes you miserable. But if you’re stuck in negativity - and since ‘misery likes company’ - you’ve probably got a motive to spread the depression around.
