Amtrak owns the rails on the NEC and a few other small sections.

Loads light or heavy are not the point. How much is the real cost of each ticket (the subsidy) and how much does the passenger pay? And the difference is the loss. Which is why they are expensive antiques best left for hobbyists ...

“This has gone on for decades and needs to stop. The carnage is unreal.”

Carnage?

How many deaths have there been in the decades that this has been going on?

Depends on the train. The Northeast corridor of Amtrak is claimed to be profitable. Amtrak blames most of its losses on its long distance trains. I think if a private railroad took over the NEC it could be very profitable.

He looked at James Taggart and said, "It's the Rio Norte line." He noticed Taggart's glance moving down to a corner of the desk. "We've had another wreck."

"Railroad accidents happen every day. Did you have to bother me about that?"

"You know what I'm saying, Jim. The Rio Norte is done for."

"If a train, traveling 125 mph, leaves Point A at eleven o’clock, breaks into two parts at noon...how many passengers arrive at Point B by one o’clock?"

We were told that there would be no math.

“A high-speed Amtrak train...broke apart”

IMO - the headline is a bit of hyperbole.

“A coupler failed...” is a bit more accurate.

And B52s have been flying since the 1950s. Trains should not be made from Plastic.

I have found numerous broken coupling hinge pins on the “tracks” over the years while walking the dog.
