Trump Asks Pentagon to Plan Military Parade

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Defense is planning a military parade at the request of President Donald Trump, White House and Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

After observing the Bastille Day celebrations in Paris last year, Mr. Trump said he wanted to hold a similar parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, perhaps to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The French parade last July, which also marked the centennial of the U.S. entry into World War I, featured more than 6,000 service members, tanks and planes overhead in an elaborate display of military might. French President Emmanuel Macron invited Mr. Trump to watch the parade beside him.

“It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen,” Mr. Trump said in September at the Lotte New York Palace hotel. “And to a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington, down Pennsylvania Avenue. I don’t know. We’re going to have to try and top it.”

The Washington Post first reported the Mr. Trump had asked the Pentagon to arrange an event in the Bastille Day style. Pentagon officials said late Tuesday that plans were in their infancy.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joe Dunford, acknowledged the parade plans while traveling in Asia. “I’m aware of the president’s request and we are in the initial planning stages to meet the president’s direction,” he said during a stop in Bangkok.

The White House said the decision demonstrated Mr. Trump’s support for the military.

Veterans Day/Memorial Day Parades are different. We are honoring the brave countrymen & women, not flexing Military might.

Yeah, I learned that lesson well, too. Never volunteer for anything.

US Navy vet here. Yes I agree parades are a pain. Tough. They’re getting paid. We are losing the country. This is a great idea.

You must have been the type of leader who always volunteered his guys to work extra hours and holidays so as to be able to brag about all of your accomplishments too, I'll bet. I'll bet your sailors just loved having to do all of that extra work on their off-time just to be able to make a splash with the brass ...

Last time I saw a military parade was at the end of Desert Storm when the military paraded through downtown San Diego. It was a moment when I thought I was going to pop with pride both seeing the troops that did it and having a true chance to say thanks to them.

On another note, why have we got all these service-avoiding/draft-dodging types on the Free Republic?

Rarely have I seen a better display of cognitive dissonance. I salute you! lol

I'm prolife, but this is one baby deserving of an abortion.

No, actually my career suffered because I tried to shield my men from the BS coming down the pipe. Most of us JO’s were guilty that and didn’t stay in the Navy. But nobody ever asked me then or anyone else to march in a national parade down Pennsylvania Ave on national TV. I think I would have volunteered for that one. I’d have marched proudly by the Gipper, at least I think I would have been. I remember being young unlike some around here.

Never volunteer for anything.

If it weren't for the volunteers of the Minute Men in the colonies, you'd be a British citizen now. Disgrace.

Do it!

* So many kids have no idea of the Military ethos and culture, this could be a positive exposure to it.

* Add our Veterans to the march, we need to always honor them, the remaining WWII guys and gals? Plenty of WWII Jeep restoration enthusiast that would volunteer that will give them a ride.

* It spits in the face of ANTIFA, and the take a Knee NFL-er's, in the sense that these are the real people you should look up too, they don't create anarchy, they stop it dead in it's tracks!

* And frankly it spits in the face of all the naysayers during the Bush years and the wars during their years. Regardless of how you think of them and their choices / and these wars, Our finest men and women served honorably and after a while the whole no blood for oil crowd and putz's like my former Senator Carl Lenin ( yes I spelled it wrong on purpose ) need a rebuke and many of these toads that held this mind set are still in the House and Senate. It is time to show them who really counts, our Veterans, not them....

It’s the American Cowboy persona. Lethal unassuming stealth.

Showboaters need not apply.

Historically the world axis of evil regimes displayed wanton Military parades of armed soldiers marching, tanks, convoy trucks, missiles, jets.

Armed Forces Day! I would love it. Would travel to see it.

Yeah I'm shamed to be an American.

I would never volunteer.

I'd rather choose to fight who show their might

And bury my guns in fear.

And I'll never stand up next to you.

No, I'm gonna run away.

Cause it ain't worth risking my neck for

the safe, the strong and the proud of the USA.

This is a bad idea. Leave military parades to the North Koreans. We already have Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day.
........................................................
This is a VERY GOOD IDEA! What’s the matter with you? Are we supposed to LIMIT our respect for this country’s founding to Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day? I’ll remind you that Bastille Day is about the people rising up against oppression; The French Revolution. 4th of July is our Declaration of Independence from oppression. Our Revolution is NOT celebrated on either Veteran’s Day or Memorial Day. Veteran’s Day was originally Armistice Day, celebrating the end of WWI, in which America was a late arrival, but the deciding factor. HOORAH for this idea! Anyone who has witnessed Bastille Day as I have will find themselves singing The Marseillaise along with the French. It is awe inspiring. We need MORE patriotism in the country, not less.

Spoken like a true REMF.

I served 8 years in the All Volunteer Army.

Go back and read your history...it was much much more than just the Minutemen.

There's a huge difference between not volunteering for bull$hit details vs. volunteering for service against an enemy. If you can't discern the difference, you're a fool.

They don’t get nationalism because they are creeps.
.......................................................
and they have been infested with Marxist ideas.
I agree with you. Nationalism reigned when we were a winning nation. Thank God the fire of Patriotism is being rekindled thanks to Donald Trump. We are unique in the world. Time we shout it from the rooftops again!
