Trump Asks Pentagon to Plan Military Parade

WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Defense is planning a military parade at the request of President Donald Trump, White House and Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

After observing the Bastille Day celebrations in Paris last year, Mr. Trump said he wanted to hold a similar parade on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, perhaps to celebrate the Fourth of July.

The French parade last July, which also marked the centennial of the U.S. entry into World War I, featured more than 6,000 service members, tanks and planes overhead in an elaborate display of military might. French President Emmanuel Macron invited Mr. Trump to watch the parade beside him.

“It was one of the greatest parades I’ve ever seen,” Mr. Trump said in September at the Lotte New York Palace hotel. “And to a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington, down Pennsylvania Avenue. I don’t know. We’re going to have to try and top it.”

The Washington Post first reported the Mr. Trump had asked the Pentagon to arrange an event in the Bastille Day style. Pentagon officials said late Tuesday that plans were in their infancy.

On Wednesday, the chairman of the Pentagon’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Joe Dunford, acknowledged the parade plans while traveling in Asia. “I’m aware of the president’s request and we are in the initial planning stages to meet the president’s direction,” he said during a stop in Bangkok.

The White House said the decision demonstrated Mr. Trump’s support for the military.

I remember someone mentioning “Psst,... those are OUR jets” when an apparatchik complained about the flyover during Clintooon’s inaugural.

This thread is unbelievable. No wonder the GOP is in trouble. Look around here.

Trump does this and it will assure his re-election but these snow flakes are melting.

I am in favor of a US Military parade and chastise those timid people that would cower in a corner and would have us miss an opportunity to stick it to the left. That is zot stuff? Really?

Exactly. Driving missiles down city streets is the same thing as men who buy expensive cars to make up for their ... shortcomings. The puerile comments here have been ridiculous.

Trump's verbal support this past year, of active-duty military and veterans, has been superb, as have his actions backing up those words. He should keep up with that course of action (as I'm sure he will) and focus on rebuilding from Obama's damage to the military.

My bona fides? Navy veteran (was in service during the final years of the Cold War), son of a 17-year Air Force veteran.

Very bad idea. For a very bad reason: To top the French? (Having put in many, many parades in my 20 years of service in the Army. I’m fine with parades, but not this one.)

its FAINT, not feint. A feint is a boxing move. But since you’re apparently just an armchair warrior, you wouldn’t know that.

He’s TROLLING the left. They will go CRAZY due to their hatred of the military - and the ENTIRE COUNTRY will finally get to see it.

This move is INGENIOUS!

Display of arms is immensely opposed in this forum by defeatist types. Afraid to be bold and proud of something good. What an absolute shame.

God bless you, sir, and your son. Those of us with military service have learned what a PITA and waste of time/money are parades, formations, marching, etc., except for boot training and movement of dismounted troops from point A to point B. Time & budget taken from training, operations, maintenance, and from families and liberty/leave.

+1

I am forever grateful that my four years in Germany were at a battalion whose mission was airbase defense. I never had to worry about extraneous BS. My first battery was over 40 miles from battalion HQ. When the base had an alert or tac eval, we were for all intents and purposes detached to the Air Force.

Unlike our brethren in Hawk and Nike-Herc units, we didn't have to worry about women being assigned to our unit. I saw the havoc that created.

My last two years, I was at Battalion HQ, mostly as the S-4. I was a real PITA by that time, and Group HQ pretty much left us alone. It was a job (Battalion Supply Officer) I was uniquely qualified for, as my degree was in Public Accounting, and very few knew our area of operations better than I.

I think I did my job well, at least as far as my Battalion Commander was concerned. We arrived back at Fort Bliss within a few months of each other, and I worked for him in another role for a year and a half.

He hated parades, too...lol.

This thread is really disappointing and I had the made the admin moderator upset at me which I do regret.

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!
