How Nunes attacks the Constitution when he tries to smear Mueller’s Russia probe
Vallejo Times-Herald ^ | February 11, 2018 | Erwin Chemerinsky

Posted on 02/11/2018 8:47:23 AM PST by ProtectOurFreedom

It is increasingly clear that President Donald Trump and the Republicans are engaging in a campaign to smear and discredit special prosecutor Robert Mueller. All of this is an effort to undermine an investigation into whether serious federal crimes occurred that potentially implicate individuals at the highest levels of the government, including Trump and members of his family.

The need for an independent criminal investigation is clear. Was there illegal collusion between Trump campaign officials and Russians? Has there been a cover-up that constitutes obstruction of justice? If so, who is responsible?

Contrary to the president’s assertion, this is not a partisan “witch hunt.” Already two individuals have plead guilty to federal crimes. George Papadopoulos plead guilty to lying to the FBI about his efforts, while a Trump campaign official, to set up meetings with Kremlin-connected sources who claimed to have damaging information about Hillary Clinton. Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn plead guilty to “willfully and knowingly” making “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to the FBI about communications exchanged with a Russian envoy shortly after Trump took office.

Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign manager for a time, and Rick Gates, his aide, have been indicted for the crime of “conspiracy against the United States.” They have been charged with operating as agents of foreign governments without registering as required by the law and laundering over $75 million in offshore accounts.

This guy was obviously schooled by Joseph Goebbels.

These people are so allergic to the truth and rule of law, you have to wonder whether or not we can have a constutional republic if enough people think this way.

We really need to indict, convict and punish these Leftist that have committed crimes at the FBI, DOJ, State etc. We also need to investigate illicit payoffs and media collusion to frame innocent citizens.

This is like saying that the State of Florida engaged in a campaign to smear and discredit Ted Bundy.

Yet civil rights, properly understood, are legitimate and essential to the rule of law. Indeed, the Civil Rights Act of 1871, which appears at 42 USC 1983, today provides a way for anyone to go into federal court to remedy a violation of a right under the Constitution or federal law. That is way that reverse discrimination cases are brought in federal court.

With rare exception these days, even academics let their politics override their larger principles.

"It seems to me I remember the Dems - with a lot of help from the media - trying to smear and discredit special prosecutor Kenneth Starr"

They sure did.

And when Starr was presenting his evidence, I forget who it was on the committee's time ran out, he got angry and said "I wish I had gotten one more crack at him!".

Imagine a republican committee member saying that to a witness. ANYONE testifying, that you wish you could have "one more crack at them".

“Do they mean like how the media treated Ken Starr and the Clinton investigation?”

Repubs effort to date with Mueller are non-existent compared to what came out in the first week of Ken Starr’s appointment. This is another straw man, to change the debate to the bad evil Repubs instead of the real facts that are emerging. Since these people are partisan fanatics, I expect nothing else. However, the internet has diluted significantly their ability to control the debate now.

All anyone has to do when this comes up on the “news” show is say something to the effect of - “Even the democraps don’t believe what they are saying, but they have to say it, maybe even purposely lie, because they have nothing else and do not respect the rule of law or the right of the American citizen to be told the truth about certain people in its government.”

Then start discussing the facts again.

Chemerinsky is embarrassing himself. A constitutional scholar, who wrote a serious legal textbook. After seeing these abuses at the FBI he now puts party ahead of the Constitution.
Flynn lied about something that wasn’t a crime.
Also- Mueller is running a counter intelligence investigation, and has not named a crime.

The Dems are calling out the big guns because the public is not trusting the Russia nonsense, and it is going no where. The Russians have made fools of them.

He is quite accomplished. Too bad he’s a liberal. Humble background, though. And he’s not gay, so there’s that.

Yes. Those are the charges. But the alleged activity all took place years before they had any association with the Trump campaign.

Manafort denies it all and has filed a civil lawsuit against Mueller and the government for basically what amounts to wrongful prosecution. I don’t know anything about the other guy.
