That is what inspection is for. A simple thing as a rivet head showing any bleeding will direction maintenance to replacement of said rivet.
There is also galvanic corrosion, which is electrolytic action between dissimilar metals that can be simply the difference in metals, but, can also be a difference in the climate that said metals exist in. Case in point, a 747 that we had acquired at NWA from an asian airline that was predominately flown from coast to coast around the Pacific rim, had become the victim of a long life of higher than normal salt in the air that led to an acceleration of galvanic corrosion.
There is a very, long verified, knowledgeable base of information on the structures and environmental impact of aircraft design.
