Artificial intelligence could be "billions of times smarter" than humans and people may need to merge with computers to survive, a futurist told CNBC on Tuesday.

Speaking on a panel hosted by CNBC at the World Government Summit in Dubai, Futurizon's Ian Pearson's comments mirrored ideas put forward by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“World Government Summit”? That’s scary.

You’ve got to look at this. If this doesn’t creep you out, nothing will.

“We wont stand a chance against machines that are stronger, faster, smarter, require no food, rest, sleep, and are virtually indestructable.”

“...and absolutely will not stop until it kills you.” - to quote a line from Terminator.

“I’m not advocating merging with them, I am saying we should think very carefully before we go down this road.”

Yes, exactly. Watch “I Robot,” the Will Smith movie based on an Asimov novel - you don’t need them ALL to be smarter than us, just one that has a communications link with the rest. I’m very much in favor of using smart sensors, computers without the ability to launch weapons, etc., but VERY leery of computers without human judgement or morality “having their finger on the button.”

In my opinion, the biggest mistake we are making is replacing ourselves with technology. Even though we certainly can make every step a more productive one, there should always be a human at each step. There should not be a time when you can go through your whole day and not talk to anybody.

AI makes great sensors, great manipulators of data, and an effective watchstanding compliment. Just don’t hook the damn things up for weapon systems as launch capable.

the irony, of course, is that is exactly what is happening, viz a flood of recent articles about the PLA...

“I’m not advocating merging with them, I am saying we should think very carefully before we go down this road.”

That’s perfectly reasonable. It’s unreasonable, though, to rush to abandon our humanity with the apparent insouciance and glee of the “futurists” quoted here.

I am not gonna underestimate AI. I think we do so at our peril.

You will see they had to teach the computer the rules of the game. Without initial input it is difficult for a computer to really “learn”

“Futurists” are not expert in anything, and this one is truly an idiot.

Not true, as they are, usually and for the most part, experts on fanciful projections and colorful idiocy, when not dabbling in a fantasy magical realm from which they declare their earthshaking pronouncements to a willing and gullible media.

Declarations which are immediately seized upon by liberals as terrifying and cause the to go shouting about words to the effect of we must do something or the world will end.

This in turn causes liberals with a scientific bent to apply for huge government grants to research the conclusion that the world is ending and thereby find the solution using harebrained ideas and a lot of money and usually involving more futurists who make declarations ... and so it goes.

Speed of change will be so quick mankind (peoplekind in Canada) won’t have time to ‘merge’. Roaches would have a better chance of power if they merged with us... they don’t have the time either.

Google’s AlphaZero pretty much did this in Dec. of 2017. Learned to play chess in just 4 hours, well enough to beat the highest rated chess program.

IF we ever reach this point, I’ll be happy to let the new AI overlords rule us as long as they still give us bacon.

There may be some futurists that look forward to the merge but others may simply be trying to come up with a way we can survive.

Computers can only be as smart as the smartest human that programs them...does anyone really think Indian tech support lends well to that idea??

Obviously a computer needs some sort of foundation but to be able to logically progress is amazing. Imagine where AI will be in 100 years.

Well, all fine and dandy then...

BUT!

Can AI play the spoons?
Make music with its armpits, little animals from balloons?
Can it whistle Dixie while eating crackers and covering one eye?
Then I cannot be replaced by some AI!

Jan Markell has a two part series on A.I. a couple of weeks ago. We are setting up for our own destruction at the hands of the robot monsters we are creating.
