Elementary Students Told They Can't Say No When Asked To Dance

School dances have been causing controversy for promoting sexist stereotypes, and now, blurring the lines of consent between boys and girls. The latest example involves a Utah mother and her daughter’s elementary school dance, which requires girls to accept boys’ invitation to hit the floor.

Mom Natalie Richard told Salt Lake City local news station Fox13 that she was in disbelief when her sixth-grade daughter came home from Kanesville Elementary with a set of ground rules for an upcoming dance: Students fill out cards with the names of five people with whom they’d like to dance, and if someone’s name is picked, they must fulfill the request.

“The teacher said she can’t [say no],” Richard told the station of her daughter’s obligation should she be selected to dance. “She has to say yes. She has to accept, and I said, ‘Excuse me.’” When Richard spoke to the school principal, “He basically just said they’ve had this dance set up this way for a long time, and they’ve never had any concern before.” A representative from the Weber School District told Fox13 that the rule is meant to be positive. “Please be respectful, be polite,” the rep told the station. “We want to promote kindness, and so we want you to say yes when someone asks you to dance.” Kanesville Elementary agreed to send permission slips to parents who weren’t aware of the rule. However, that’s not sufficient for Richard, who told ABC13, “Psychologically, my daughter keeps coming to me and saying ‘I can’t say no to a boy.’ That’s the message kids are getting.”

Doesn’t this, sort of/kind of, go against the #METOO movement deal the libs have been pushing? Where’s their outcry for this attack on women’s right to choose to say NO?

“Most do.....I know I did.”

So did my son. Before hitting middle school it was a daily fight (twice a day actually) to get him to brush his teeth much less take a shower. Once he discovered girls? Showers and enough of that nasty smelling body spray to suffocate anything at his end of the house.

Craziest thing I’ve read in days. A lot of folks have not thought this through.
All this does is push the girls back into the passive, submissive female model other women say they reject.

All this does is push the boys to expect prompt cooperation aka obedience at their demand. “Chop-Chop!”

Children are people too, and they have opinions that should be respected whenever possible. No means no.

Cards are filled out with the names of five people.

Say no to a same sex dance and it’s off to reeducation camp for you.

Awful... dances are a great way to encourage boys to initiate and for girls to make decisions. These things can be done with kindness and not compulsion.

This is hardly any different that the rule of etiquette which requires a gentleman at a ball to dance either 1) only with the lady he is squiring, or 2) with all of the ladies at his table.

Would anyone here object to their children being taught this rule of etiquette?

Regards,

A lady has an option as to who she is squired by, and ought to have the good sense to pick good companions at table. A gentlemen ought to display the same traits.

Within those parameters, I agree with the rule of etiquette, but what is going on at the school is not the same.

There is a difference between one person's view of etiquette, which people are free to accept or reject, and a school-enforced requirement.

Out of curiousity, what happens if the guy has gone stag?

If a boy has been obnoxious to a girl or showing her unwanted attention, she has the obvious right to say no to avoid leading him on or giving him an opener for more abuse. I’d coach my child to say no under those circumstances and screw the school’s policy. What is the worst that can happen, anyway? Anything the school does to the child will bring the wrath of an angry parent down on their heads.

And what if it’s a boy asking another boy to dance? That is no longer a far fetched idea and such advances need to be stopped cold.

My question is simple but salient.

Why in the world do they have Elementary School “Dances”?

That’s simply ridiculous. Social activities like that have no place whatsoever in the “school” setting, private or public, but most of all.......Public schools.

As a parent, I’d never consent to allowing my child to participate in such a function. That’s absolutely ridiculous!

Soon high school kids will be told they can’t say no to dating transgender students. Don’t be bigoted over your girl date happening to have a penis.

If she can’t say “no” to a dance, what else can’t she say “no” to?

This could lead the way to unrestricted rape in later years...you can’t tell the boy “no”? Part of being a guy is occasional rejection by girls.

Compatibility and personal attraction are very deep and personal things, and cannot be guided by “the village”.

Get back to teaching those kids the Constitution, math, spelling, and the Bible and cut out all of this social crap...that will take care of itself in years to come.
