Thanks for reminding me about France’s historical relationship to countries in the region. I am not an expert on that subject beyond knowing Algeria was a colony and that Lebanese people I’ve met can also speak French.
Re: refugees, at this point can’t comment on the political decision. All I can pray is that God is working through the situation and that the news of genuine Christian conversions taking place among them is true.
And that many of them actually had decent lives/careers at one point and do want to eventually go back home.
I learned a lot as a kid thanks to the danged out-of-date maps hanging on this windowshade-like thing in front of the classrooms. There were multiple maps, and they could be pulled down individually, and rerolled, pretty neat idea. We had glimpses of the era between the wars, showing most of Africa under French, British, Belgian, Portuguese, and Spanish control. One set of maps must have been a bit newer, showed "Manchukuo", or Japanese-occupied Manchuria. :^)
Your username and apt commentary on these boards suggests you are someone most acquainted with civilizations and their “contents” - both ancient and modern! :)
